We cannot stress enough the importance of making quick and accurate returns of salmon catches, even if nothing has been caught. Recording catch data is one (perhaps the best, certainly the most cost effective) way of determining the success of our river restoration works. Although affected by short term variations in weather and water conditions, the longer term data set will build an accurate picture of our salmon runs. Catch returns can be made quickly via our online form for both Passport and non-Passport waters. Most of our reporting is from the Wye. Where a salmon has come from another river we will state accordingly.

And with that the salmon season comes to an end on both rivers. We are still getting reports from beats but it is one that will be remembered for how low both rivers were for so long and the 2 extreme record breaking heatwaves. If it wasnt for the Elan release we would have dropped below 1976's water levels on the Wye.

There were mortalities, probably more than we know about as previous studies have shown that when the rivers are so low for so long C.20% of the stock can be lost in the estuaries and inshore waters. On the Wye, despite last week's spate a considerable number of fish are still in the lower reaches and we still need another decent spate to shift them to their spawning grounds.

We don't get many reports from the Usk, but it appears to have had another disappointing season, possibly even worse than last year.

Let's hope 2023 sees more water in the spring and summer and no extreme heat waves.

Thursday 8 September 2022

Bigsweir: 80 so far this season. There has been no fishing in August due to the low flows and high water temperatures

1:14 pm

Heavy showers and storms over the last few days have dropped 25-70mm of rain across both catchments and the rivers are now responding. There is some welcome extra water pushing through the pools. There is a further 20-30mm of rain today and we might actually see a meaningful rise.

Wednesday 3 August 2022

3:29 pm

Wyesham: 11lber this am on fly

Saturday 30 July 2022

9:16 pm

Wyesham: 12lber this morning on a fly

Monday 25 July 2022

7:54 am

20-30mm of rain across the headwaters of both rivers has caused the Upper Wye, Irfon, Ithon and Upper Usk to rise into a small, but very welcome, spate. It is unlikely to move fish, but it is what both rivers need and will drop water temps right back which with the extra water, will improve prospects in the lower beats of boith rivers.

Monday 11 July 2022

3:14 pm

Upper Bigsweir : 10 fish reported for June.
