A glorious bright autumn day but little to show for it - 2 grayling and 1 trout, all around 10". Fish rose steadily throughout the day but my limited entomology meant I could not identify what they were taking. Nevertheless, I managed to move several fish to dry flies which proved difficult to hook. Visited by an otter just as I was leaving.

1 x 8lb cock salmon from Stone Catch. several fish in residence making themselves known throughout the day. great day - finally avoided being forced off due to weather! Oh, and many thanks for the cow that opened and slobbered all over my pastie I was saving for lunch!

Tough call whether to forgo the Rugby live or record and fish. Couldn't resist the opportunity of decent water and sure enough it looked perfect if still a touch tea stained.
I hadn't really mentally realised it was October until I was properly cold & stiff having worked down the beat. Still after re establishing blood flow, try again and 9Lb hen fish on T&L in Lady Alexs' Catch. Short but very deep.

11 x grayling mostly 12" but a few upto 15". 1 x trout 14". Fish taken mostly in a klinkhammer but a couple came to an olive nymph. The fish were occasionally rising and were happy to oblige so long as the dry was presented well. Some of the rise forms were very small and it is surprising how large some of the fish are when you do hook them. I often suspected a small fish had taken until I set the hook and they were fairly good grayling. Only fished from 10 til 2 and things seemed to be getting a little more active as I was leaving. Good day in all but I must get some waders that dont leak before the winter comes. Does anyone know a brand that doesn't leak? (I've never found one).

A lovely autumn start with the odd oncer rising. The fog didn't clear until about 9.30 a.m., by which time I had taken five grayling on a hare's ear emerger and Grayling Steel Blue. Once the sun came out things got tougher (and it stayed out all day). The wind became quite strong and blew hard upstream until mid-afternoon; not too helpful for ideal presentation but by early afternoon I had taken ten fish. A few pale wateries and some olives (probably LDOs) appeared for a few hours around midday plus the wind brought the bonus of substantial leaf fall complete no doubt with insect passengers, so I kept going with surface patterns as at least some fish were in heads-up mode (although I had taken one fish on a Red Tag spider on a washing line up from my emerger). Moved to the upper section at about 1.30. and there, until late afternoon, took most fish on the GSB. As in the morning most of the fish taken were non-risers but the GSB was happily taken by those that were. Some fly about into early evening including some sedges, and some rising fish, and more grayling were taken on the two emergers. Finished the day with 24 grayling including one chubby 17" 1.75 pounder, two 14", eight 13", and three 12" fish; the rest being 9-10". Oh and one parr and two 3-4" grayling (good news) - a delightful autumn day's fishing.

4 x grayling 8-15 inches, various small trout and parr. It may seem a bit churlish of me because it's always nice to catch a few grayling, but I was really a bit disappointed with this session, knowing how very well Abernant can fish in September. I have checked the recent returns and see a gentleman from Kew had it really on song a couple of days ago when the level was dropping back. I only wish it had been me! It also fished surprisingly well in August. This morning I was hoping for surface action, but there were very few rises to dries, spiders weren't particularly attractive, and in fact the grayling were generally dour. Perhaps they don't like the increase in temperature. Never mind, try another day.

Rose one salmon to orange cascade but no contact. Midday 2h session with trout rod produced 7 grayling up to 14" and one sea liced trout around 13". Enjoyable day with nice water flow, light winds and good company.

Water looked good but no Salmon seen or caught. In a well known Salmon lie in Abernant stream an 18" brownie gave me a couple of seconds of uncertainty but could never do itself justice on the big rod. Shame I could never connect when trout fishing. I'll have to try Salmon flies in the future!

The stars were aligned perfectly for this day on the Wye: great drive up; lovely B&B (Old Vicarage) with a great breakfast; weather perfect (light cloud; slight wind); river falling after a spate. Twenty-one brown trout, mostly 10" and above; and one 18" and possibly bigger (it ran across the river stripping line from the reel at an amazing pace: it thought it was a salmon). Eleven grayling, mostly c. 16" and two of 18". In total, 32 lovely fish, all carefully returned. All taken on a traditional Adams (dry); size 14. After difficult days on the Wye in previous years, this has reminded me just how productive the upper Wye can be (or has the fishing improved?). My favourite river.
