After visiting the Wye in May and leaving very despondent at the distinct lack of life in and around the river it was nice to see one or two aquatic insects and a few rising trout this time.
The river looked good for a Salmon after the recent heavy rain with it carrying some extra water and being a nice beer colour so I was quietly confident of a pull. I spent about four and a half hours slowly fishing through Lady Alexander’s Catch and into Stone Catch. It was lovely casting a fly and letting it swing through the current, I did hook a trout and had a decent tug which may or may not have been a Salmon but I’m beginning to think the whole exercise is a nostalgic trip dreaming of how things used to be rather than a serious attempt to actually catch a Salmon with the numbers being what they are.

A first visit to this beat. Low clear water, cool and some drizzle. The fishing was promising to start with, trout taking freely in the rocky glides and channels at the top of the beat but petered out a bit early afternoon. Trout were mainly 7”-10” with a couple of bigger fish caught in the tail of the Edw pool late on. A small hen salmon showed a few times at the top of the beat but she was very coloured and given the conditions, I wouldn’t have cast for her even if I wasn’t on a trout only ticket. The Stone catch fished well but there were quite a few chub around. Lady Alexander’s catch was a little disappointing in the low water conditions but I would definitely return with higher water to fish it for salmon.

Overall, a pleasant day on a very pretty beat but the takes today were lightning fast and I was too slow to convert all the offers that I had to a variety of patterns.

Most were caught on nymph only one on dry fly. Lady Alexanders run was most productive especially after crossing and fishing it from the other side. Not much surface activity or flies in the air but whether was overcast all day. Some decent fish mostly on smaller side but still alot of action and missed quite a few.

Only fished from 2.30pm onwards. Very little fly life all day - the occasional yellow may dun later in the afternoon. Only very small fish rising. All trout caught were small (15-20cm), most on caddis pupa and emerger patterns. Hoped I’d find a decent fish or two feeding late on, but sadly no. Finished around 9.30pm.

Late afternoon was disturbed by group of people on the opposite bank coming to swim and mess about in the river. I think they were staying in Abernant House on the opposite bank. They effectively ruined fishing over 200+m of river for over an hour.

Excellent days fishing catching thirteen WBT, two of which were exceptional. See photos. Used spider's on two droppers with a Gold Head Hares Ear flashback on the point. Eleven were caught on the Hares Ear and two on a Greenwells spider. Lost four more before I could net them and had loads of pulls where they were coming short.

A cold dull day for June and a pretty lifeless river until about 6pm. Nymphed a bit and then had some nice fast action on dry flies 6 to 7ish. Caught two, missed three. Lovely beat though. Looked like a lot of fishable water and a beautiful quiet spot. Really enjoyed my day.
