Good flow, sunshine & showers, 1 8" trout & 5 grayling largest 14" mostly to downstream wets swung in the faster water in Abernant stream, one on a nymph under a EHC later in the day. Saw a couple of fish rising late on by Stone Catch flats. One other angler after salmon on the lower half.

4 Anglers and one guide fished this beat during the Tenkara experience day run by the WUF. All but one angler caught fish. My tally was a salmon parr - released unharmed - and two that 'got away'. One, a good sized grayling which broke the tippet, and a brown trout that simply fell off the hook before being brought to hand.
The Tenkara day was great value and well organised. Pity that it rained heavily all day. I learnt a great deal and would not hesitate to recommend the training day to any angler wishing to know more about tenkara fishing.
One of my colleagues for the day worked for the Environmental Agency in Essex. He was able to give an impromptu tutorial and demonstration of the invertebrate life found under the rocks in the river. As a novice fly fisherman I found this tutorial very interesting and, so, would like to suggest that the WUF run a Stream Invertebrate Identification and Ecology course at some point. I, for one, would be very keen to attend.

We return here every year and always have a good day. Today was no disappointment, though a little harder than usual with slightly higher water than we're used to in June/July. We had two good fish from the rocks at the top of the beat: me one of about 1.5lbs on a Sawyers and my friend a very nice 3lb wbt on a GRHE. Other than these two, the other three were 8" to 6" on a variety of other nymphs.

A day which promised much with the river in fine condition, some warmth in the air and not too bright. Sadly, through lack of skill or some other reason unknown we caught one fish between us! I have fished the Wye 3 times in the last two years and found on each occasion that the best technique was to fish across and down with a team of small dark flies. The previous two visits, this method has been highly successful and so we began the day employing this tactic. We tried most methods throughout the day but only had any success using small dark flies. We lost several fish and had a lot of 'plucks' too but only landed one fish. This stretch of the river is lovely and the middle section is easy to access and fish. The rest of the beat is more suited to salmon anglers I feel but nonetheless we had a lovely day in beuatiful surroundings.
