Mis-timed an evening assault on the river. Height up to 2 foot at Fownhope and quite coloured, although still a couple of feet of visibility so not impossible. Fished Corner Tree and Vanstone carefully with no result. No salmon seen but had wonderful views of an otter and her young cub. Tremendous fly activity at dusk, caddis and spinners (Yellow Mays?), which brought a few trout and chub to the surface despite the extra water and colour.

Very early start to beat the canoes - fished hard till lunch sadly for nothing. 1 fish seen in Maddox and 5 in Vanstone right at the end of the beat. Canoes became unbearable around 12.30, but up to that point very enjoyable.

1 Chub

Lovely day. Lovely Water. Lovely conditions. Ruined by canoes. Perhaps 250 before lunch? Like fishing in a busy boating lake. Gave up at lunch time where we could bare it no more.

Saw fish show in Windmill and Maddox but did not
connect with anything. Finished early because of
the strength of the wind.

No sign of fish. Top half of beat needs paths cutting through bankside vegetation for better access.

Enjoyable day fishing lovely water - One salmon seen no contacts sadly. Plenty of great water for the fly angler on this beat. Many thanks to Seth & WUF for all your help!

Started fishing at 5:00 am worked down through Maddox, Corner pool, and into The Vanstone with fly and spinner. River was in good condition, nice clarity but too much silkweed washing through though. No fish seen but a good day, cant wait to go back.

This was the first time I've fished the Wye, and I was advised to have a go at Goodrich Court. The river had risen slightly the day previous, and was falling off during the day. The water was a murky brown colour and there was a lot of weed to contend with.
Whilst I knew the river would be big in this area, I have to say that fishing a beat such as this I couldn't help feeling that most of the time I was fishing over dead water, or fishing in pools where the fish could literally be anywhere. The Maddox and Stones pools seemed the exception, and I enjoyed fishing these at various times in the day; although like the rest of the beat, to no avail. I saw neither sight nor sound of salmo salar.
Very well done to the WUF on their access arrangements, maps and beat guides, which were very useful, although not 100% accurate (especially the Corner Tree notes).
I'd love to be able to say I'll be back to the Wye, but I'm afraid I don't think I will, certainly not this part anyway! Not the Wye's fault, but mine for anticipating a beat with more than a couple of pools I would enjoy fishing, and which didn't appear to be more suited to Coarse angling (notwithstanding this is where Mr Pashley caught a bucket load of fish!).
