Fishing can be capricious! We were debating whether to go for sewin given recent rain but decided to stick within our comfort zone and stick to the Wye this week. Forecast was spot on – rain in the afternoon – but it was a lovely day when the sun shone. The river looked perfect.... clear and bright, there does seem to be more gravel these days.
There was a continual hatch of olives throughout the day – small size 18 jobbies and also larger olive uprights. The spinners dancing in the evening sunshine were a wonderful sight. This ephemeropteran activity kept the fish on the fin all day and both trout and grayling were on form all along the beat. 45 fish between us has to be our best ever day on passport beats – wonderful fishing. Best trout 18 inches, best grayling 17 inches but most grayling were 14-15 inch pea in a pod typical strong Wye fish, and all safely returned.
Last knockings I returned to fish the top pool where I had a couple of fish in the morning. As usual there were blipping rises where the run in slows in to the deep gully. I put my dry fly over them expecting tiddlers…. It disappeared in to a blip and all hell broke loose, starting with a wrestle – the fish then charged off down the gully, stripping line off the reel. I did catch a brief glimpse of something the size of a small submarine before the hook pulled out! JB also hooked and lost something similar which decided flying was preferable to swimming before the hook came out of that one too.
A previous feedback commented on the lack of trout in this beat. They are there for sure! As are the otters, one of whom surfaced by rocks about 6 feet away from me for a moment – we looked at each other, I don’t know who was more surprised – before she continued on her way.
Oh and more knotweed logged with Louis for spraying.
A superb days fishing – thank you!

Very mixed weather and only grayling caught mainly on nymphs in faster water. Have fished before and had much more success on dry flies in evening with lots of rises and trout. Surprised no trout caught and heard from local that some issues with river in last few years. Beautiful location and saw a few otters, but trout fishing nothing like a few years back. Maybe it was weather, otters or run-off or combo of all three. I hope this beat recovers as it is stunning and a great place to fish and look at nature.

Mixed weather - very windy with downpours followed by sunshine. Beautiful beat and all fish caught on nymphs mainly in fast water. Did not see a trout all day. In the past. had a wonderful evening rise with good sport for trout on dry flies. Apparently the local chicken farms are causing pollution and a local told me this has devastated the trout stocks. Such a shame as this was a wonderful place to fish. Not sure I will be back and one wonders what the EA are doing about it with all those angling fees?

Cool, blustery day with rain at times. Water level VERY low. Few hatches, occasional rises. Fishing was Pretty tough. Beautiful location and will return once We know for sure that the river is properly fishable. Locals all mentioning low river level and pollution is killing the fishing. Shame....

Fishing seemed quite slow, took two fish in a single run and then nothing more for a long while. Grayling taken on Tight Line methods. Trout taken on dry fly in shallow runs.. Lovely section to fish. Thank you.

A stunning day on one of the Upper Wye's most varied and impressive beats. Lowish water level with excellent flow brought plenty of fish to the net on both nymph and dry fly. A firm favourite of all the beats on the Wye with a brilliant team behind it. Can't wait to return.

Great conditions in the morning but wind picked up and made it tricky in the afternoon. No catches sadly but will come again, stunning beat !
