River very low and gin clear, somewhat reminiscent of a Hampshire chalk stream. Good hatch of March Browns from 11am for about an hour. Fish not really consistently rising to them and very hard to cover in glassy clear water. Tough day on the river.

Very quiet, low, clear water with a cool northern wind. Fish rising occasionally, very sporadic unfortunately.

We failed to capitalise fully on a nice hatch of March Browns between 12 and 1pm, though in fairness there wasn’t a sustained rise. I did manage a stunning 19” fish which was voraciously feeding on emergers on a deerhair and quill pattern and lost two other nice fish. My friend also chipped in with a 15” fish on nymph. A glorious day to be by the river.

1 very nice 2.5 lb trout while salmon fishing in the Butts. Took a 1.5 in black and silver tube and was returned.

Despite the river not being as high as yesterday, it was still pretty high but beginning to fine down. To my inexpert eye, it was right at the limit of fishable. More in hope than expectation I fished down the Rheld Flats as far as I could wade and also the Butts. I picked up a nice trout (1.5lb) on the Red Francis conehead but not sign of a salmon. I think the river will be at a good height tomorrow (Sunday) morning but a whole load more rain is due in the afternoon. Such is backend fishing! I also had a good chat with fellow angler David who was after trout with the streamer and had more persistence than me.

Lovely beat, small spate fining off in reasonable condition, some great pools but such a shame no Salmon seen. Many thanks all.

2 trout and missed another 4. All on the dry in the last hour or so. Large fish boiled at the fly but no connection unfortunatley! You can clearly see the effects of phosphate pollution on this river which is a worry. No weed in the beat and a tree full of cormorants do not bode well....

Only got to fish for a couple of hours as matters turned out. Lovely beat - mostly flats for trout purposes at this height, but still quite deep in places. Fish quite co-operative to the nymph.
Could not open either fishing hut. Don’t know if access to them is supposed to be thrown in (think the directions mention them) but rather mean spirited I would say if not.

Fishing Passport Note : The huts are mentioned as points of reference but as far as we are aware, the huts are for season rod holder use only. The owner has been asked to confirm.

First time fishing the beat. Surprised by how much flat/pool water there was with only 3 discernible 'heads' to target. The fishing was exceptional. Found fish congregated around the oxygenated water (especially in 50-80cm of water). Fish were eating well on nymphs. Fished 2x 3mm PTN style nymphs most of the time (silver and copper beads).

Took some large fish (30-45cm) and lost (after a long fight and 2 jumps) a fish over 50cm (dark and heavy cockfish). Made me rethink fishing 7x on the lower Usk beats.

One thing I noted was that the water did not recover particularly well. Refishing productive areas was slow and only the odd fish came out.

I have fished the Usk for 40 years now and 20 odd years ago I introduced a friend, Tony Baldwin to the Usk. We went our separate fishing ways and lost touch. But today we decided to rekindle an old partnership and he put me to shame with an absolutely beautiful specimen brown of 3 pounds. Well done mate. A privilege to be in such company and thank you Wye and Usk
