Fantastic fishing again on this beat. The bottom half is just sublime in summer, with many large fish. Caught a fish of 2lb and another of 3lb with careful stalking on dries. Doesn’t get much better.

One smaller fish did have quite a few fish lice

I start fishing at 5:15 and at 5:45 all raising action was ended. River Usk was flat as dead. At 13:00 I moved to the Wye.

Two small brown trout caught on pheasant tail nymphs under an indicator. Some fish were taking dries on the evening rise but were hard to entice. Lovely day thank you.

Had a salmon ticket but only fished for trout. Took 3 on spiders - one very good fish - during the morning when there was very little happening on the surface. Water went very quiet in the warm bright afternoon. The evening was brilliant fishing - rises everywhere although hard to pin down what they were taking. Caught another three including a 2 lb fish at last light. Lovely beat - saw otter, kingfishers and enjoyed watching the bank swallows coming and going.

A strong downstream wind made fishing very awkward. Sporadic hatches of olives and yellow may duns brought fish up periodically from late morning to late afternoon. I walked up and down a lot to find rising fish. In the evening some fish talking spent spinner at the tails of pools. Only 4 fish to the net (largest about 1.5lbs) but no less than 8 fish lost, three of which were probably north of 2lbs. Obviously very frustrating but still a cracking day on a lovely stretch of river.

Went for an evenings trout fishing, but as tackling up saw a salmon head and tail, and then 20mins later another a bit futher downstream. I upgraded the ticket and broke out the salmon rod in the car and fished through the Rheld, right in the prime lie the line pulled away and after a good scrap a fresh fish of around 10lb graced the net. Thought I was in again in the Butts but it was a 2.5-3lb trout. Nothing was rising in the middle of the beat (Butts to Above Rheld) as the sandmartins were nabbing every single fly hatching and every dun and spinner in the air. Only place there were rising fish was at the bottom of the beat where there were no sand martins! In the 3ft vis highish water, most action was in water less than 2ft deep and they readily accepted a jingler fished in the film. Most on the small size with 1 of around 1.5lb.

1 Salmon, 6 Trout
