Arrived at 9:00am and walked the accessible RHS bank. Nothing rising but good spots noted. Started with nymph but by 10:30am a trickle of March Browns started showing as the conditions warmed in the strong sunlight. Changed over to a Davie McPhail inspired March Brown tied on a size 12, and immediately hooked into a 2lb brownie. Walked to other good spots and had a 1 1/2lb and a 10" brownie in each of these. The March Brown hatch and rising fish suddenly stopped around midday. Trickle of LDO's pm but nothing rising. Couldn't tempt any further takes on nymph in areas where I now knew there were trout. Glorious warm weather 17C and nice river level 0.34m at Crickhowell. First decent day out on the Usk. Today was all about the conditions and the March Brown Hatch.

First time on this beat so it took a little while to get my bearings. The river looked in good condition. Once set up and ready to start there were immediately some rising fish. Once I got into position about 11:45 there was a real flurry of rises (both MBs and LDOs). I had a couple of rises to my offering but couldn't connect. By about 12:20 it was all over. The rest of the afternoon was spent wandering the bank with the occasional cast in possible places. Very occasional rises but generally where all the earlier action occurred. Great to be on the river but on this occasion I didn't crack the code.

River clearing. Odd March Brown's and hatch of snaller fly. The odd take on nymphs but only one hooked and that briefly.

The river was down a touch on yesterday and slightly clearer but still carrying a tinge. We knew big rain was coming by early afternoon so we were on the river by 10am. We fished from 10 to about 1.30pm. The weather alternated from light drizzle to dry but overcast. At lunchtime we saw hatches of olives of several different sizes and caddis. And the sand martins were furiously swooping, even when we could see nothing so presumably it was midges. But, given a moderate to good hatch, not a rise was seen. One fish of a pound and a bit was taken on a montana-type small streamer, another better fish turned but not hooked on something similar under the trees and another fish pricked on a PTN nymph on the edge of some faster water. I was glad to introduce Pete to the Usk this weekend and I think his appetite has been whetted, despite our relatively poor catch. Putting the rods away now til next spring, sadly.

Disappointed with featureless beat other than two areas of interest. Very few fish showing, two or three all day.
Birdlife was great other than the Goosanders and Cormorants!!! Will not return.
