.Beautiful day, warm, mild breeze and some cloud, river good height and colour and flow. What went wrong? No hatch to speak of with few upwings. No rising fish. Failed with nymphs, spiders, emergers.

A blank day, and a wet one! This beat seems to me best for dry-fly fishing in terms of the water, but inaccessible for bank fishing. Therefore only fishable where shallow enough to wade. There were lots of rising fish in the deep water, but unreachable as far as I could see!

Four good-sized trout hooked on twitched mayfly fished in the margins but all came off - had to adapt as slow-moving gin clear water made conventional approach very difficult with so much real fly life to compete with - could see fish coming up and rejecting what I though to be very good matches on ultra-light sunk leader with zero drag. This is a lovely beat with a good mix of water and no dog walkers. Will easily accommodate the maximum rod number. Other rod also struggled to compete with the rich fly life coming off, but neither of us cared as just being on this beat is enough.

Lots of fly life, but none could be tempted to take off the top. All fish caught using nymphs, and all returned.

Warm and breezy. Challenging fishing with endless fly changes. The majority or rises were to tiny spent flies drifting past, like a endless conveyor. Almost impossible to imitate. The only deviation to a natural fly, fluttering on the surface. 3 fish to 1lb for 2 rods.
