Very bright. Breathless. 1 wbt early on before the sun burnt the mist away. 2 on for a while and then off. Then just got very bright and tricky. Pulled stumps at 2pm to get back to London.

River slightly coloured but back to normal levels after heavy rain over Fri/Sat. Clear and bright weather conditions, light breeze, with temperature of 15C. Sporadic olive hatch from around 15:00 but only two rises from small trout seen. No sign of nymphing fish.

Worked all the wadable sections of the beat with nymph and dry fly - but no success

on the positive side I saw otters, dippers.egrets and kingfishers. there were trout feeding until the sun finally broke through at around 2pm. the fish beat me and that can happen. it has been around ten years since i fished this beat before it became a foundation water, and in that time it does not look as though any bank side work has been done. the access in and out of the river is very poor especially the lower end of the beat. this makes getting in and out of the water dangerous and damaging to waders as there are many brambles hidden in the undergrowth. this used to be such a lovely beat, but in its present condition i cannot recommend it and will not be returning. sorry for this negative observation but action is required.

This was my first time fishing on the Usk for Trout and what a terrific beat it is! Water levels meant that you could really get into the river and at the fish. This river is teeming with life. Our first trout was caught on a black nymph and then the second two on a green Klinkhammer pattern. Clearly the fish were feeding just under the surface of the water. Our best trout was a 1.5lb beauty, caught at the bottom of the beat in the tail of the first pool. A glorious day in a glorius setting.

River low and water warm. Oppressive heat. No fly life to speak of. No fish activity.
