Another day of unfathomable Usk fishing! Good river height, reasonable air temperature, proven flies from previous visits but no hatch to speak of with very few fish looking up? Good to see the kingfisher and the dipper and see the otter tracks, amazed to see and photograph a virtually tame mink! A great day to enjoy the lovely Welsh countryside in spite of the Usk trout fishing having seen better days!

Lovely spring-like day. Temp c. 8C-10C and bright. No wind. Water cold. Fished bugs on bottom. Sporadic Dark Olives floated down from mid-day until around 3pm. One good-looking trout about 1.5lb on a pheasant-tail nymph on dropper. Two or three rises. Fished with guide Chris Price, who I would thoroughly recommend. And his Kelly kettle was a great warmer! Another cold day for the Oxford Ice Fishers but we are a resilient bunch. Very good breakfast at the Dragon Inn, Crickhowell set us up nicely for a days fishing and the water was much clearer than the day before.
As the others found on Saturday the water level restricted access to the top 500yds of the beat and our skills were not able to winkle out any fish despite this we returned home happy if cold.

Fast cold water, little access on the lower 3/4 of the beat due to water levels so efforts concentrated on 500yds south of the bridge at the top.
Despite best efforts no fish were caught but Steve Willis' Pork Pie and Quails eggs at lunch were excellent and fortified us for the snow shower that followed.
Well we are the Oxford Ice Fishers.

Two small brownies caught on a greenwells and released. A beautiful stretch of river. Heavy rain in the morning and a warm sunny afternoon. Very little surface activity. Saw two salmon but hardly a trout. Access is okay when working upstream - if you can find the steps.

Bright and sunny with water low but with a tinge of colour. Lots of caddis flying, and some olives and stoneflies but the few rises were small fish or salmon parr. 8 trout, up to 12 inches caught mainly on a tiny nymph but one to two on a dry. Close encounter with a black mink on the bank, but no otters this time.

Good level to the river and just a tinge of colour on arrival. Promising start with a few small trout to GRHE. Some truly tropical downpoors added more colour to the river and the fishing slowed down. However three further trout added 8-13inches made a very satisfactory day an a excellent antidote to the recent low rivers.
