Fishing:Winter Grayling
Two small grayling caught on PTN. The river was quite high and rising during my visit. I covered most of the beat and never saw a single fish move on or near the surface. My hopes were raised for a moment when I heard several loud splashes under an oak tree. At first I though it was a big fish noisily taking something off the surface, but it turned out to be a clumsy sqirrel dropping acorns into the river. I found this a difficult day, but I'll be back.

There had been heavy overnight rain so the river was both rising and colouring up. Did not see a fish rise all day. Fished Czech nymph style and took half a dozen out of season trout and half a dozen grayling. Best fish was the first one - a grayling of a pound and a half or so but the others were all on the small side. Pink bugs proved the best patterns. Despite the awful weather (it continued to rain for most of the day) it was still a joy to be back on the Irfon. There cannot be many places that can match the beauty of this valley.

A good day all round but started very slow. No interest in the heavy bugs but later in the day we changed to dry flies and brought fish to the surface all over the fishery. Approx 20+ Grayling and a few WBT to the net with many more missed. The biggest fish being around 18in. Thank you again for a great day.

9 x grayling 8-16 inches, 7 x out of season trout 6-10 inches, mainly on dry Red Tag and Grayling Steel Blue. Sunless and suddenly cold, although the water was dropping to a good fishing level and clearing during the day. Just a few small Olives from midday but only the occasional fish rising and they were "picky." Met my pal DC of Moccas halfway up and he seemed to be doing better with the duo. The best grayling actually came to a heavy nymph along the bottom, just before dusk.

A cool day at 11 degrees, and the water even colder at 9 degrees. Winter is on its way. Will wear the thermal LJs from now on - brrrrrrr! Some olives on and off from about 11 a.m. but not too many fish rising to them. Mainly fished duo (but only two fish came to the nymphs) or just an emerger. Had no joy bugging. Finished the day with 8 grayling and 5 trout. Best trout 13-14" but most about 8-10". Had two 16", each about 1.75lb, and one 14" grayling; the rest 8-12". Rising or non-rising fish either took an E H Caddis or a small dark olive Duck's Dun. A really nice day on this lovely bit of water.

The morning proved quite difficult with just the odd fish here and there. During the early afternoon we managed to find a pod of fish which were more than happy to come to the surface to take the dry fly. From there on we had a good day both fishing to rising fish and prospecting with a Klinkhammer along much of the beat. Around 20-30 fish to the net with approx. 70% being grayling.

Celebrating my 50th birthday on one of my favourite beats. River fining down though still a little high. Around 15 fish between the two of us, an equal mix of grayling and WBT mostly to deep nymphs. However, a small hatch of olives midday meant a couple of fish on small traditional spiders. The day was capped by a stunning 2lb grayling to my fishing partner.

None as the beat was unfishable due to the weather. So,I did not go and I was told that refunds are not possible. Could not postpone to another date as I was on holiday -I live near Cambridge. On the previous Monday I was due to go on the same beat with Gareth Lewis and it was a wash-off. He has probably been in touch with you.

A fantastic days fishing despite the rainy conditions! A mixed bag of over 30 grayling and trout to the net with a few others lost just at the point of landing. The weather turned cold and wet from mid-day, but we continued to catch on a variety of methods, with around five fish taking the dry. Fantastic!
