Fished the runs with a nymph, no touches. Take a wading stick, couldn’t cover the main runs and gutters as wading was tricky.

A wonderful place to spend the day fishing. Kingfishers, dippers , wagtails, herons, (and sadly) cormorants all seen. A fox wandered by on the path. Mushrooms were everywhere. A bedrock dominated venue. Luckily the 2 pools either side of the broken stile have a gravel substrate so for the sake of my back I concentrated on these. A trout and a grayling to spiders and a surprise dace to a small sedge. Missed two other takes but not much hatching or rising. Water level below 0.4 on Abernant scale. A venue for lower water conditions I would suggest.

5 wild brown trout caught and released. One fish in particular displayed the classic appearance of the traditional “Irfon trout”, beautifully marked and in excellent condition.

River level approximately 0.3 and running very well considering the recent weather. Water temperature recorded at 16°C. Despite the warm conditions, there remained plenty of shaded water, good oxygenated flow throughout the beat, and the river looks healthy!

Fish were predominantly located in faster, well-oxygenated water.

A thoroughly enjoyable and encouraging day on the Irfon, beautiful beat, and a day I will remember for some time!

5 Trout

Access to the lower half of the beat was not possible due to two broken styles to cross fences on the beat. It is too deep to wade around the fenced section.

4 Trout, 2 Grayling

River finally at a fishable level at around 0.4 on the Abernant gauge. Nothing caught or seen. Only fished the lower part of the beat as the stile is broken and the ditch beyond it full of brambles. The river wasn't quite low enough to safely wade around the fence.

I’ve fished this beat many times over the past 10 years but not this year. I’d been watching the river levels carefully and at 7 am the reading was .622m which is just about fishable and although light rain was forecast it had risen to 0.652 by the time I started at 9, by the time I left at 3.30 it was 0.924. No sign of fish and the water pushing through too fast to wade safely. I also lost a relatively new Snowbee retractable wading stick, the cord somehow snapped in the current. Btw the stile is completely broken and the boards across the ditch overgrown with brambles. I love this beat and will be back.

Fantastic afternoon — lovely beat and really easy access. Very autumnal, with a bit of a headwind and leaves and acorns falling all around. One grayling graced my net, caught on a purple pheasant tail, then sent safely back on its way. Thank you.

Only 12°C but a very light wind, decent conditions overall. Very little activity on top so nymphing was the order of the day. Apart from two modest grayling didn't have any other tugs, bumps or otherwise.
