I would like to lay the blame for not catching on a tricky upstream wind but the total bag for the day belies this. Once again it would appear that every species bar Salmon was intent on taking any fly that was offered; the Chub being especially enthusiastic!
One major positive was the knowledge gained from wadding this beat with the levels at sub 0.35 at Ross; both left and right banks of Foy Bridge section are accessible and I look forward to an evening with the single hander later in the season.

Lovely morning's fishing. Chub much more interested in my flies than any salmon which may have been present.

Nasty upstream wind but river was perfect. Not a sniff on lures, (FC or Mepps) and so even with the wind the new fly rod had to be cast; 15ft beast did punch the 37g shooting head into the gale, when I got the hang of it, and took 3 trout to 2lb+ and a 4lb(ish) chub on a Tony Frew pattern; Hellefossen Special. All in the fast water below bridge on left bank. Did have one huge pull lower down from right bank but could have been anything.
Note: Swans are now nesting on Island, not too aggressive yet but could get feisty later!

Although I fished the Creel last season I'd not looked that closely at the diminutive Foy Bridge beat and was astonished at the amount of properly lively fly water there was, more Scotland than Herefordshire, and with the river in excellent condition I enjoyed three whole hours fishing this section; wading no more than thigh deep down the left bank, before moving down to the island. It would appear that every species of fish, bar Salmon, was determined to take a fly today. The use of spinners in the slower sections further down the right bank woke up more Pike but tended not to hook up on the single barbless.
My only disappointment was the difficulty in accessing what must be one of the finest fly runs on the Wye; first section of right bank of The Creel, 'The Lyndor Pool' and 'The Pulpit'. Bank too high/steep, water too deep/swift to wade; easy enough for spinning but seemed sacrilegious! Perhaps in days gone by they would have used a boat? Having said all that, I'll probably be going again next week to fish the rest; eight hours wasn't enough....
