The day was colder than expected with no hatch of fly at all. There was just a few flies mostly taken by grey wagtails. I caught 4 trout, the largest of which was 3/4 lb. He leapt like a salmon out of the water to take the fly, and got to about 50cm !! He was safely returned.
There was a lot of plastic debris around the pool, largely left by picnickers, youths and whoever else is let loose there. I have reported it to the WUF.
WUF Note: Report received and we are investigating this problem.

Cold downstream wind and a lack of fly life but the better fish (best at 16.5") and two others lost all took size 16 Olive Klinkhammers fished on the edge of turbulent water at the heads of pools. One taken on a downstream olive nymph. Warmer weather and a bigger hatch of fly and no doubt this beat really comes alive.

Hard day on the Usk in warm sunshine, a few grannom in the air but nothing hatching. River clear and slightly raised I would say. Fished upstream nymph most of the time and a little bit of dry fly. Fished 9.30 till 5pm.
Walked into discarded barbed wire in the wooded section of the bank 100m below the hut that I saw and missed last year, tore my newly repaired waders, you have been warned.

Water was pushing through the beat at quite a pace (showing just over 1 ft on the Brecon gauge) and was very clear. We fished throughout the beat (upstream and downstream) using a variety of small nymph and spider patterns - PTNs and Greenwells Spiders proving most successful - and after numerous takes (and misses !) we managed to bring some good sized fish to the net ( 1 - 1.5 lbs). In mid-afternoon a sudden heavy shower prompted an extensive hatch, which in turn brought fish to the top. After a rapid fumble to change to a dry, and several attempts at targeting rising fish, I managed to secure a very strong and healthy 2.5 lb fish - and after an anxious scrap returned him safely to the water. We decided to fish later than usual, and pressed on for another hour, and in that final effort we both secured another fish each - DJ netting and returning a good fish of 1.5 lbs.
A really enjoyable day, and a terrific and varied beat to put you to the test.
