2 x small trout on orange spider. Funny day, weather was ideal but fish not playing. Hardly any rising fish. Nice beat, I enjoyed it.

Had great expectations: a warm, muggy overcast day with just a gentle breeze. Some olives, pale wateries and black gnats coming off. WBT on third cast of the day was a good omen. Then nothing . A dribble of flies over the course of the day but no sustained hatch, so resorted to nymph. Report received of a salmon jumping at the bottom of the beat

Thank you for crediting me for the booked days I could not make last year because of the Covid ban on travelling to Wales. This was a lovely day on one of my favourite beats with the river in great condition and with a good flow. An Usk expert could probably have caught a lot of fish as flies, including mayfly, were coming off all day and particularly in the late afternoon, and plenty of fish were moving, though I did not locate any sizeable ones. I took three smallish trout on a goldhead pheasant tail, two in the Abercynrig Pool and one in Llanobery - they wouldn't look at any of my dries, probably my fault. I found it quite awkward to climb over the crossing point on the fence leading to the lower pool - in fact I dragged a fallen tree trunk there to give us something to step on. My other hobby is wildlife photography and I spent a lot of my day on that, getting shots of a hunting male kingfisher (which appears to have a nest somewhere in the high bank at Llanobery, so please be cautious), a pair of redstarts and grey and pied wagtails catching flies.

Bright and warm, but some cloud cover in the morning.. No significant hatches going on and both fish (c 9-12ins) took a hare's ear dropper. Sadly had to leave early so not sure what happened later in the day.

Unusual start to the day, met another couple of fishermen who thought they had booked the beat for the day, turns out they had the wrong day. Hopefully they found another beat to fish today and they have a good day tomorrow.
Bright start to the day, water a good hight and very clear. Brought a small WBT to hand on PTN early in the day. Clouded over so went for dries, although very little rising. Nothing until mid afternoon then a couple of 1lb WBT on a dark Dun.
And finally a lovely fish of about 2.5 - 3lb, taken under the trees on far bank about half way down first field. A spider was too hard to resist.
The Usk can be a difficult river and unpredictable but when you have days like today it is just magic. Swallows, Heron and a Kingfisher at the bottom of beat..... and four fish in great condition all returned.

7 inches on the gauge, so quite low, clear.
V sunny first thing, then a little cloudier.
TrickleĀ of small olives in the morning, some mayfly mid-afternoon.
Caught all fish on nymph, only saw 3 fish rise all day, including one that rose to my dry fly (I missed it).
