A beautiful day greeted me, the river had a good flow and was crystal clear. Only the odd fly hatched certainly not enough to get the fish looking up. Unfortunately they didn’t appear to be looking down either.
Tried hard to no avail, nil return.
I’ll be back!!

After abandoning my Upper Tower booking, I headed to Abercynrig. The water was a tad high but running pretty clear with a slight tinge. Very little fly life with only a few LDOs in sight. There was pretty cold gust that didn’t help. I managed 4 trout on a spider and nymph combo and bumped a few off so all in all, a successful day considering the circumstances. Great to be back on the water despite the chilly and wet conditions.

First day of the season! Snow on Pen y Fan but sunny weather with a chilly breeze. River running clear but still a little high (0.7m on the Brecon gauge). Fished 11:00 - 15:00; water level dropped significantly over the 4 hours. No hatch and did not see a fish rise. Water running fast over the shallows so focused on a beaded PTN in the slower, deeper water of Llanobery Pool. Lost one good fish at the net.

Last day of the season! River in great condition with the Brecon gauge at 11”. Fished the afternoon working from the bottom to the top of the beat. No hatch but winkled out 4 WBT with a PTN. A good end to a very difficult season!

It's been 15 years since I first went to Abercyrig, then Dinas & Abercyrig. I'll never forget that day; late September doing my last ditch trout fitshing for the year, when the river rose, and I saw my first salmon run. THere were fish swimming through and we had maybe 40 or 50 sightings. It was that day that lead me to become a salmon fisherman.

Here we are, years later, and today, I did not see a single salmon. The water was quite high but dropping and, in this respect, good for salmon, but nothing. I think it's wrong to even bother trying.

River still high (15” on Brecon gauge); running fast but clear and cold. No self respecting trout was going to waste energy in the fast water so worked down the beat exploring the pockets of calmer water with a PTN - without success. Focused on the deeper pools. Some olives coming off which attracted the attention of the occasional fish - but nothing for me. One more trip before the end of the season!
