Fished with a fly for salmon for approximately 4 hours with no success at all. Tried a variety of fly patterns - nothing helped. River was very low - some pools almost impossible to fish with a fly as a result due to insufficient flow to make the fly swim.
Beat bailiff was very helpful in terms of fly advice and telling me where to fish, but no fish even seen, let alone caught. Coarse anglers did report one salmon jumping mid-afternoon.

First visit to the fishery. A splendid beat with secure parking. Overnight rain resulted in high, fast, coloured water making fly fishing pointless. As I had driven a long way, I made the best of a bad job by merely practice-casting before returning home.

No Salmon caught despite an excellent days fishing with both fly and lures. River conditions low and very clear so not ideal, however there were four 10 to 12lb fish in one pool that moved on as soon as I presented a lure.

Very bright and very warm; and the river approaching gin-like levels of clarity. But the crucial limiting factor if I'm honest was my casting. No amount of practice and looking stylish in the park (enduring comments such as 'caught anything mate' - I invested hours in it!) evidently enough to manage a sinker line on the actual water. I switched to an intermediate but the water is still cold and there was a fair pace to the flow. Not surprising then that nothing came up to have a look. I'll stick to trout fishing until the grilse show up and I can fish a floater - early season salmon fishing is not for me.

I went down to the home waters for a couple of hours after midday today to see if there was yet any sign of fly life. Was not too optimistic given the intermittent downstream wind and rain forecast for early afternoon. As over the last week or so, I saw no olives - they are clearly much later here on the middle river than further up and on the Usk. Happily though, the first of the March Browns eventually arrived instead. So, having had no joy initially with olive nymphs, I decided to change to a March Brown Duck's Dun variant and had a trout and four OOS grayling, the best of which was a nice 16" fish of just under 1.5lb. Most were non rising fish but clearly looking up and seeing something of interest. Water still cold at 6 degrees. It's a start but probably still needs to warm up a bit!

2lb Chub taken whilst salmon fishing using fly. River falling slightly though windy and overcast conditions made the day quite miserable. Clearest water this week.
