Water still very high in the reservoir restricting access to only a couple of places (wall of the dam and 5 minutes walk along the path. Very few fish rising at the start of day (5:30) but mid morning were showing near the dam..too far out for me to reach. As always, lovely and quiet and I managed to film a badger come out of the grass, come over to my waders before sniffing me and realising I wasn't a frog, and scampering off...quite a treat and made up for not catching any fish.

Reservoir very full, right back to the steep banking beneath the path, which limited safe access to the waters edge to only a couple of spots from the path, and impossible to circumnavigate to the opposite side, as I would normally do. A few fish rising but nothing interested in what i had to offer: wet, dry, nymph, blobs etc on #8 floating and slow sink. Erratic cold wind but, as usual, marvellously quiet and peaceful. Tripped in the water, landed on a wee river fly rod I hadn’t had out of the tube for years, broke it, filled my waders and got cold wet feet!! But hey, great to be out playing again.

A few trout rising but very few close enough to reach and even less willing to take a fly. Nothing caught, not even a nibble on the bottom or mid water. Great place to be quiet and peaceful regardless of catching anything. Reservoir full for the first time in months and subsequently attracting water birds - which was rather pleasant.

Started fishing 5:30, water in reservoir very low and mud a bit tricky to negotiate. A number of fish rising so started with dry (black) fly and caught one brown trout (10”) which we returned. As morning warmed up I swapped to various combinations wet fly, indicator/dropper etc then moved to lures as daughter was being successful spinning with size 3 mepps. She got 3 brownies between 8” - 10”, again returned. Day got really hot and sunny so just about to pack up at 10:30 when I had a cheeky punt with a dry (black) fly at a rise nearby and landed a lovely brownie. 14”, 425g. Took that home.
