early on in the day i saw a very large shoal of what i assume were char rising to take small midges making they're way around the lake, they only came into casting range for a brief moment but didn't take my flies and when the wind came back they were gone. i tried the same spot as where i had the char yesterday for a short while before deciding to give Melyn LLyn a go.

I arrived at llyn Dulyn to very calm and sunny weather with the intended aim of catching an arctic char on fly. in total i had a few hours fishing and managed to catch one small but lively char. I caught it at the far side of the lake by where the waterfalls enter. a mallard and claret fished deep on an intermediate line retrieved at a medium pace is what brought me success. I was over the moon to have got a char as catching one has been a goal of mine for many years. I would highly recommend bringing some kind of sinking line as the lake gets extremely deep out very close to the bank.

Very windy and too difficult to cast a fly line……beautiful scenery though.

Just the one fish, a nice wild brown of 1lb+. Spectacular location. The water level was extremely low, with high winds also making it a chore to fish, but the scenery made up for it.

Well worth the drive and walk in. Something completely different.

Took exactly an hour to walk in from the car park and just over a hour to walk back. Good Land Rover track until you are at Llyn Melynllyn then you are on a sheep track down hill for the final section. No danger of getting a dog in the river during your session here! Very isolated location.

10.00-14.30 session so I would say I did not see the best parts of the day. Bright sunny day. Wind picked up a few times but always died off and the surface soon settled again. Saw 6 rises while setting up then only about another 6 before I finished within casting distance. However there was more activity way out towards the middle.

Walked round to the waterfall and fished back to the corner by the hut. 1 rod kitted out for dry flys and wet flies (no joy on this rod today) the other with intermediate line for getting right down. Lost a fish on an Alexandra then caught a brown trout and a char on a Red Tag nymph retrieved very slowly at depth.

Saw a peregrine falcon.

No need for waders as you do not need to enter the water and there is a very sudden drop off. You will need the backpack space for fishing kit!

Will definitely be going back for another session.

Clear bright day so tried fishing deeper (the lake is exceptionally deep) Caught a superb trout approx 14” . Very grateful to Fishing Passport for making these amazing waters so accessible.

Great day in the mountains, hike in worthwhile. The rain cleared and had some blue in the sky. Fished for about 6hrs, finally rewarded with a trout, caught on a wet diawl bach after trying numerous other patterns through the day.
