No fish today. A beautiful location. Sadly virtually no fish to see. Probably the weather

Ideal water conditions, but the 11 - 18 mph Easterly was our fear factor, even if it was upstream.
Olives and the odd March Brown got going from 12 o'clock. By about 1 pm there was a trickle of flies on the water. We selected a sheltered spot. The valley is deep on this beat and there was no ripple on the water. Olives and March Browns sailed downstream unmolested. We saw 7 single rises (oncers) in total without real evidence of what the fish took. Certainly half-hearted rises, compared to the confident vigorous rise forms when fish are feeding. We tried everything under the sun. Spiders, deep nymphing, dry-fly blind casting...the lot!
The fish had different ideas. Lovely day to be out regardless. Sunny, beautiful surroundings, dippers, kites and kingfishers. We will certainly return to this lovely beat.

Helpful farmer.

Cloudy day with very light upstream breeze. Temperature rising from 9 to 13 degrees during the day. No hatch of LDOs or March browns. Despite the almost perfect conditions for fishing, the invertebrates did not view the conditions as favourable for taking to the air. Saw only one rise all day, and no more than six olives. Two fish caught on March brown nymph fished upstream (1 lb and 6oz), and two on the same nymph fished across and down (2lb and 1.5lb). All fish returned.

Not an auspicious start to the season; broken rod, lost net, lost fish ….but great to be out on this beautiful beat again. A few rises and a few knocks but as soon as this happened I was joined by two separate phalanxes of canoeists… are they supposed to be there?
