Four fish including a fat 19" - all returned. PTN did its job. Many thanks to David, the owner, for accommodating my change of plan.

Away to go Erik, he caught 2 trout in summer low and bright conditions in the afternoon after some casting lesson and river craft. The first was half pound the second 3.5lbs which did 4 runs of 30 metres and he handled it like a pro and considering this was only his sixth trip fly fishing. Where does he go from here?!!

Lovely overcast and warm day but river very low after all this dry weather. Trickle hatch of grannom together with a few upwinged flies. Some fish rising in the slower pools during the afternoon, but proved impossible to tempt on dry flies. Managed to catch two fish on small olive nymphs of 1.5 lb and a superb fish of 2.5 lb in cracking condition. Beautiful beat and owner very helpful and friendly.

Blank. I struggled I'm afraid. It's several years since I was at Fenni Fach and I had forgotten what a very beautiful beat this is - with the odd specimen trout, no doubt, although I certainly found it difficult today. The temperature had dropped compared to the last days. A very few large dark olives hatched after lunch. I found just two rising fish...and put them both down.

Crystal clear water with plenty of flies in the air. Trout not interested in dries yet, only two fish spotted rising so nymphing most of the day with some success. Three trout netted 9-10” and one 15-17” lost after short fight. All fish returned unharmed. Lovely spring day, very interesting beat, definitely I will be back later in the season expecting nothing less than fishing eldorado.

Thanks to WUF, thanks to David fishery owner for a great day out.

1 BT about a pound C&R'd early on via a Deer Hair Emerger and that was it! Couldn't get a sniff on nymphs. Water low and clear with sunny, warm conditions. As K from Brum said, plenty of fly in the air but not much hatching. Lovely fishery but wading dicey in parts.

Low water, crystal clear. Few flies hatching but very occasional fish rising. None caught.

No fish caught. One of possibly up to 2lbs lost after a brief tussle though - on hare's ear. One or two other takes but nothing landed.
Slight lull in very brisk SW wind seemed to prompt a small hatch of LDO late morning but apart from that there was little surface fly life (as far as my limited experience could indicate...).
Great to be out of the water - thanks WUF.

River very low and I managed to spook a large trout in the shallows early on. A hatch started about 11.30am. Finally I found a feeding fish and switched from my nymph to a dry quill paradun and a lovely 2lb+ fish was netted and returned. There was a lovely pool just upstream from the vicarage pool with at least half a dozen fish feeding but they did not like the look of my flies so I had to settle for one for the day. Certainly would like to return some day. One comment - why would anyone want to retain trout from here as the population seems fragile in number but of good average size. Lovely day.

Beautiful spring day. Very bright and warm. The river was right down to its bones and is in serious need of some rain if fishing is to pick up. LDOs hatching off from 11 reaching a peak around 12.30. Then some March Browns hatching (or are they brook duns?). The fish rose sporadically and were hard to tempt. I landed one beauty of 2.5lbs and another 1lb trout - both taken on a CDC Olive emerger. I also lost three other very good fish. Two went off with tremendous power and broke me off a rock and tree branch - the problem is you need light tippet to hook them, but this gives them the edge for the first part of the fight. The third was hooked in a fast gutter and just threw the hook. There were a few fish rising in the evening to spents, but they were in slack water and spooked on the first cast. If Tony Blair was a fly fisherman he would have shaken his head and said "presentation, presentation, presentation!" and he would have been right.
