A lovely beat with lots of varied water. We fished dry fly and nymph and took fish off the top as well as from down below. Fish were moving to small Stonefly and Sedge on the surface and small orange shrimp patterns fished deep tempted the Grayling. The river was low and clear but fished well. A lovely day.

DC & GC had another day on this nice beat but the fishing was really hard going due to a very strong and gusting wind. No sign of any surface activity so nymphs used. GC had 4 grayling and DC 3 grayling up to to 10inches. The 2 other were small wbt.
Many thanks to the Colonel and W&U.

Choosing to fish on the day ex-hurricane Ophelia blew wasn't the best idea but nonetheless we had a great day on this lovely stretch of water. A stiff downstream breeze did make it difficult but we fished until mid-afternoon when the amount of branches etc. coming down meant we called it a day a bit earlier than we would of normally. All grayling were taken on the dry fly, amazing considering there were so many leaves on the surface that the grayling could hardly have seen the flies. Small out of season trout took nymphs. All fish returned. First time on the Colonel's Water, we will definitely be back. The Fishing Passport is an extremely efficient way of trying new waters.

DC & GC found it hard going today, very strong gusty downstream wind, hence many leaves drifting through. No surface activity so nymphs were the order of the day. The grayling were 6/8inches and the oos wbt the same.
Thanks to the Colonel and W&U for making this beat available.

10 x grayling 7-13 inches, 1 x out of season trout 19 inches, Sturdy's Fancy plus a couple of the grayling on Tungsten Hare's Ear. First time on this new beat and I managed to explore most of the double bank section. Much of it is very different from the typical Irfon, even being full of weed, and reminds me of Llandewi on the Ithon. As the start was rather cold I began with heavy nymphs, which weren't very effective and it was well into the afternoon when I began to notice a few rises - I had to slog back to the car and make up the dry fly rod which I had been too lazy to bring with me on the bank. The big trout was a surprise, sipping like a little grayling on a pool tail, took a size 16 Sturdy's Fancy and then was airborne like a rocket quite a few times as it dashed around. Unfortunately it was out of season of course. A disconcerting number of people arrived at the river to peer into pools looking for salmon.
