Good fishing despite bright sun, fish caught on French leader and nymphs. Grayling to 15 inches, trout to 12. Sport tailed off about 2.30ish.

Very bright day, clear low water tried all sorts of patterns. No luck this time but I'll be back!

First time fishing Ty- Newydd, what a fantastic place, must have been extremely exclusive when the Wye was on form back in the day, what a stunning view from the fishing lodge,
However back to the fishing which considering the bright sun and low water was pretty good, until I came across another angler who was fishing Czech nymphs using a French leader, he was catching very well, after a brief chat, and some research when I arrived home, that is one serious fish catching method.
Thanks to WUF for a great day out in the countryside safe from the draw of trying to catch a salmon.

Excellent sport throughout the day.

The weather was cool and misty in the morning, definitely more autumnal than late summer. The sun came out later, triggering sporadic hatches of pale wateries, small sedges, medium olives, and what looked like out of season yellow mays. Grayling and trout were rising freely throughout the day in the glides and in the creases on the edge of riffles. I fished dries above Cillau falls, catching on klinkhamers and small (#16 and 18) palmered grayling 'tags' (double badger, red tag etc.). In the late afternoon I fished a team of spiders (partridge and orange and yellow dotterel) down and across through the fast run below the falls and had great fun picking up smaller fish. I tried Czech nymphs in some of the deeper pools, connecting with a couple of reasonable grayling although they bumped off the barbless hooks as I had too much line out and was over-reaching (still haven't got to grips with this technique). Most of the grayling caught were in the 8-10" category although I also had four around 11-12". All of the trout were wild; the two largest were around 11" and the rest were parr.

The access was excellent, with safe off-road parking and no distance to the river (on the right bank, at least). The wading was moderate; the gravel sections were easy enough but some care is needed on the larger cobbles and particularly around the large boulders, where the current has scoured out deceptively deep pots. I avoided wading on the bedrock as my boot felt and studs are worn. I also avoided the planks as they were too high at this water level (0.7m on the EA's Erwood gauge), and it looked like a good way to end up with an early bath.

A very picturesque beat, with plenty of wildlife although I didn't see any otters or salmon. Thanks to the WUF booking office team for suggesting this beat - good advice and a good fit for the type of fishing I was after. Now, which beats have the specimen grayling?

3 small trout - all returned and a 3lb grayling all caught on a PTN

River in fine fettle with falling water levels. Steady trickle of Pale Wateries and BWO hatching off. Through most of afternoon, only salmon parr taking the hatching duns. Early evening the grayling also started coming to the dry fly. Most successful method was fishing a team of spiders across and down. Most productive flies were size 16 snipe & purple and size 14 water hen bloa. Most of the grayling in the 6-8 ounce size range.

Fished 8.30am - 1pm. Water clear and warmer than I was expecting with a light breeze.
Trout - 1 x 7, 2 x 9 and 2 x 10 inches. Grayling 7, 10 and 14 inches. All on dark nymphs. The larger Grayling has some small green domed fungal growths on the dorsum just back from the head.

5 Trout, 3 Grayling

First visit to Ty-Newydd, booked by a friend. A great day out in a stunning location. Water was clear with a bit of everything. Took a couple of small grayling on a weighted GRHE in the fast water before hooking a small brown 6-8 inches. Worked our way up the beat in the afternoon again picking up several grayling. My companion for the day hooked into a couple of larger fish around 1.5lbs but didn't quite manage to land!
Had an interesting liaison with an otter around 3pm, within 10ft of my rod tip.
One small issue on otherwise a good day was a young man encouraging his two dogs into a pool by throwing sticks and lumps of drift wood (dogs barking constantly) fished the pool later without a touch.
All fish returned.
