With flow over the gauge it was un-fishable for trout. So went to Wentwood Res. instead, stood in the rain for most of the day, and had four fine rainbows each.

Nothing caught.
It was a cold May day with no hatches seen.
Fishing nymphs I had a few missed takes. I was surprised to lose 3 flies during takes and was using Frog Hair tippet x7 for the first time.

8 x trout 6-15 inches, various spiders and Dark Olive Sparkle Dun. A short but busy large dark olive hatch on a day of cold winds and showers. And for 10 minutes I played a really nice big trout, hooked on the point with a Hare's Lug and Plover, which after all sorts of acrobatics unexpectedly dropped off at the last moment. Didn't Isaac Walton say something about what you never had, you cannot consider lost? Not much of a consolation!

9 x trout 8-15 inches on spiders. Fairly high water, though not quite a flood and not too coloured. A very cold downstream wind and sunshine alternating with showers, fish initially reluctant to rise, had me fishing wet flies down and across. The problem with this is that trout tend to be lightly hooked. I lost more than I netted. Large dark olives hatched after lunch and, very briefly, a few march browns. On the subject of flies, the hawthorn trailing its black legs is now about - the first I have seen this year and well before St Mark's Day. And the martins have arrived.

2 x trout around 10 inches each. I have to comment that I'm finding these days which begin with a frost and then go up to over 20 degrees after lunch with a bright and merciless sun illuminating every inch of the bottom of a slow-moving river, rather tough going to put it mildly. Plus there are the non-angling walkers you meet on the bank who invariably say: "What lovely weather! Must be great for fishing I suppose!" You feel such a grouch if you reply: "Absolutely not; this kind of weather is the last thing we want." Anyway, wherever you go fishing it's a chance to explore the river bed - knowledge which will come in handy sooner or later. This day was saved by a brief and rather sparse hatch of march browns after lunch. I missed about six takes and got a modest brace on spiders - Woodcock and Hare's Lug.
