Rain overnight bumped the river level from 0.6m to 1m on the Llandetty gauge. Running with a heavy stain in the morning too. The fresh water brought the river to life - LDO and March Browns coming off all morning in good numbers and trout rising viciously to sedge patterns fished in the slacks around the fast water.
Slowed down from 1-5pm, before a prolific Grannom hatch (I think) from 5-5.30. This brought some fish up, but in nothing like the numbers or intensity.
Difficult swirling currents in the heavy flow made dry fly presentation challenging.

Stunning stretch of river, great nymphing water. Caught at least 10 trout, lost just as many. Quite a lot of action.

Fished for 3-4hrs in the morning only. Fished duo with a Klinkhamer on the dry above a number of different nymph patterns underneath. No bites and no fish caught.
There was some insect activity but no sign of any surface feeding. I did try an olive jingler towards the end but no joy.

Zero return on this date.
Glorious day on the water with a few strong hatches.
A hand full of rising fish on the middle section but very sparse.
In hind sight, should have spent more time on the uppermost pool.
Will book this beat again but possibly on a day not so sunny and not on a school holiday Saturday!

I hadn’t been to Glan yr Afon for quite a few years. My memory was coloured by relatively high water which made wading very difficult and the fishing opportunities limited. With today’s very low river, it was reversed and I had a great time picking my way up the river. The blazing sunshine was not however helpful. Flies were hatching when I arrived at 9.30 am , small sedges and midges mainly. However, at around midday a hatch of olives (not MB or LDO) started and went on for an hour or so. Slashing rises also started and I had great fun targeting various fish, as always in non-easy spots. Eventually two came to hand to an olive dry, both around a pound. But I loved to pocket water and variety of this beat. There were a couple of dog walkers and a lady doing some wild swimming. It took about twenty minutes for her to summon the bravery to get in and then she only lasted about a minute before jumping out. Otherwise I had it to myself. I suspect it may be busier on weekends and high summer.
