This was a very frustrating day on the river. It started well with a brace of 14" brown trout taken in quick succesion to a large brook dun imitation. But then the hoards came and set up camp on every access point to the river, splashing about and taking their dogs for swims. One couple even had an inflatable boat they were sitting in anchored to a tree. On top of the crowds the sky was bright and the water quite coloured. I stuck it out and took one more 12" trout to an olive F fly late in the afternoon but all in all a very tough day.
This is definitely not a beat to fish on a sunny bank holiday weekend.

Not a sausage. Insects all over the water and not a fish rising. Beautiful weather though...

Fantastic looking beat, gusty downstream wind sometimes made casting difficult but managed to catch seven trout up to 15 ins using dry fly and nymph, biggest on a dry fly, missed or lost just as many. Glad I had a wading stick.

Bright sunshine, crystal clear water, a fair bit of wind (to which this beat is prone) and quite a few walkers and paddlers making a bit of a splash - so not the easiest of days. Rise occurred between about 11am and 2pm. Ended up fishing deeper with small PTN on very light line and caught two good browns and lost two others - one a fish of a lifetime which has been replaying in my mind ever since!

A beautiful day to be on the river. Little wind and sporadic rises all day and some consistently feeding fish to target. 6 trout to 14 inches to a variety of methods with the largest to a parachute Adams. Would have been interesting to fish into the early evening but bushed by 4pm having started at 10.

Great day fishing with Dave Marsh on this fantastic beat. Lots of different types of water to fish but all 9 fish were taken on the dry fly; March Brown imitations. We did have an unusual interval when some swimmers came and bathed in the pool that Dave was fishing! Fished from 10:00 to 15:30 when the hatches had come to an end and the fish had stopped rising.
Highly recommended beat.

Very enjoyable day spent fishing in a truly beautiful location. Weather cloudy with occasional heavy showers, but long spells of sunshine. Mayfly nymphs in the water and a few mayflies in the air! Fish occasionally slashing at adult mayfly imitation skittered on surface but more consistently interested in Walker's mayfly nymph cast upstream. Fine trout of 1lb in the net eventually, on the nymph - plenty of action but first time on a river in a few years and kept missing takes and losing fish!

A cold start (8 degrees at 10am) and a strong breeze meant a slow and tricky beginning with just one WBT in the morning, on a gold head PTN fished below a Klinkhammer. Things livened up in the afternoon with 3 good fish on the dry (Para Adams) following a big hatch of Large Brook Duns at 2.30 ish making things very lively for half an hour. All in all despite the chilliness, low water (rain please!) and the breeze an excellent day.

Two of us fished Glan-yr-Afon from about 12.45 to 18.00. Great to be back on this stunning stretch of the Usk, despite a very challenging breeze all afternoon and the odd hail shower! Connected with but lost three decent fish, all on dries - as per previous reports, the most effective flies were March Brown and Large Dark Olive. The one fish actually caught fell to the old faithful Partridge and Orange, fished through the tail of a riffle on the near side midway along the beat. Only had thigh waders and therefore couldn't reach some of the water on the far side that looked tempting. Fingers crossed for less wind next time!

Lovely stretch of river. Water low but plenty enough for the purpose. Downstream wind so mostly wet fly. Black Pennell took the majority. All small - in fact, suspiciously similar in size. Wondered whether it may have been the same fish five more times. Anyway, he's hopefully going to get older and wiser and much, much bigger.
