Very nice day on the river. Long winter session 0815-1500 on the water. Caught a stunning osbt (estimated at comfortable over 45cm) early on then nothing else all day! Fished the whole beat from the bottom boundary to the water works without even a knock.
Very cold east wind. Gin clear water.
The river is mostly easily accessible throughout this beat with some excellent looking pools and runs. Going on the incredible amounts of otter prints along the sandy beaches there must be a good amount of fish here..
A very enjoyable day even without finding a winter grayling and a definite return is required for another try!

Two anglers nymphing. The river was at 0.65 on the Abernant gauge and gradually falling as the day went on.
One OOS trout, and by the end of the day, I lost count of how many Grayling parr I caught or managed to shake loose in almost every single pool fished. Annoying for the angler but it bodes well for the future as there has clearly been a successful spawning season!

8 between us today, with one especially good grayling of about 2lb. A slow start to the day but once the river dropped to around 0.6 the fishing picked up. Both anglers euro nymphed. All fish were returned with minimum delay, especially trout.

An “interesting” day during which I walked 3.5 miles, regrettably mainly criss-crossing through fields, trying to access the river rather than in the river itself. Assembling the jigsaw of previous catch returns once home, I think I should on reflection have given Melyn Cildu a miss. Having parked in the downstream car park, there has in places, been massive bankside erosion, negating access. Relatively new barbed wire fencing along the upper part of the middle section of the beat, and a forest of bracken, makes access to the river difficult, and one can’t access the top third of the beat at all by following the riverbank upstream. To do that one must park at the upstream parking, from where access to the river is nigh impossible (yet more barbed wire) and that discovered after the descent of a long and very steep incline to get down to and back from the river. Add to all of that, the fact that the bottom 16% of the beat is in a deep inaccessible ravine, guarded by yet more barbed wire, I left unimpressed. I would estimate that only about 50 - 60% of the fishery is accessible at any time and probably offers better value for money at more favourable times of the year, before the bracken appears and then after it has died back. In future I will stick to fishing at Cefnllysgwynne.

Due to heavy rain early on the morning of 3rd, the river was in flood and the colour of drinking chocolate.
Access to the river is very poor due to extensive fencing, whilst I appreciate the need to keep the sheep out of the river, 2 or 3 stiles (especially at the top of the beat) would be of enormous help

1 oost. Quickly returned. No sign of grayling today. Very cold wet and grey. Beat is lovely. Some access issues mid beat due to flood damage. Could do with a sort out in the summer
