A beautiful stretch. Mainly sunny, with modest (annoying) downstream breeze at times. Sporadic fly hatches during the day, bringing up occasional fish. All fish caught on dries, most by prospecting likely runs. Better fish showed late on.

First time to Buckland and enjoyed myself enormously. The high bank makes easy river access limited to a couple of areas, however I could see where, with a little more persistence you could explore much more of the river from them. I fished in two stints: 10am to 2pm and 7pm to 10pm. A small fish from the bobbly water above Beech pool on an Olive emerger in the first session. There was a hatch and rises in progress at 10am. Mainly olives with the odd mayfly. It petered out at about 11.30. The evening session seemed similar at first, a light hatch and intermittent rises. By 8.30 pm though, the wind had dropped right down and there were many more flies and big gloopy rises rang out in the dusk. Finally I covered a riser with a small pale watery that I assumed was a half pounder. It took and I soon realised it was much bigger. It did all the things you dream of in the closed season. Leapt, made my reel spin, tried to get into roots and more. I’m not great at estimating weight, but I estimate it at 2.5 pounds but I’ll remember it as three! A similar sized fish broke me 10 minutes later. I won’t be fishing here again on less than 5lb tippet… A great evening fishing and a PB wild trout after decades of fishing. Can’t ask for more than that!!
