Thoroughly enjoyable day: a new beat for me and managed to catch a few! The river was clearly up a bit from summer low after last weekend's storm, but water was clear enough. As noted in other returns, although there are access points it is quite wild, with steep banks covered with dense growth, and while wading was fine where the water level was low enough, there are many sections too deep to wade at this water level. I loved it, but I'm perfectly happy scrambling about a bit. Grayling 8-11", OOS trout were very nice, 3 fine specimens at 13-14", although of course I barely noticed, returning them post-haste. Last trout from nearer top of beat was a 16" stockie - see pic - with a faint blue spot in the middle of its underbelly. Presumably from some neighbouring club?

1 x trout 12 inches, Duck's Dun. The only fish I saw rising this morning. A sharp frost followed by bright sun and the river very low again.

Returning after previous wash off. I could now get in the river which was crucial as the area is heavily banked and the beat is tree lined for almost the entire length. Not really a sniff of anything until late on at last light when I saw a good fish rise in one of the lower pools. I stalked and cast a few times, but to no avail. Left with no fish, but no lost tackle (which under the circumstances was quite the result) Best thing about the evening was the rock band playing in the Monnow studio alongside the river. Don't know who they were, but they'll go far. As for me, I'll stick to the more mountainous geography of the Upper Wye from now on.

We visited this stretch of the river. It is completely inaccessible without waders there are four entry points onto the beat from the old mill house back to the road. The stream is very difficult to access without significant mountaineering skills. I took my boys to teach them fly-fishing and it was time wasted. No fish seen let alone caught. Very frustrating. Access not easily found and when you do it is so over shadowed by trees and scrub that you can’t possibly fish.

Blank. A couple of hours this morning looking at lower Monnow pools. Nothing seen or risen - a few late mayflies still around. However (reasons to be cheerful), although the level is still very low and the bottom covered with slime, that brown stain has gone from the water. And it's raining, so things can only get better!

Hard fishing, as expected on such a hot day. Banks very overgrown so access to the river tricky in places.

1 x trout 10 inches, sundry baby chub at the surface, Parachute Adams. A hot and sultry evening, the Monnow still with that thick brown stain and - what rather spoiled the visit for me - a party of trespassing canoeists on their way down through the beat towards Monmouth just after I started. They refused to leave the river and splashed their way through every pool.
