Some nice sized trout today, biggest a pound and a half. Gold bead nymphs particularly effective in the coloured water which was up a foot or so overnight but dropping by the time I packed up at 5.30pm.
Very few rising fish and not many hatching insects in a blustery breeze.
Put a salmon fly through the low water catches in case anything crept up. Nothing seen.

Half a dozen touches, bumps, pulls and on/offs mainly in the
Gravel Catch. The day saved by a heroic 4” troutlet that took my perdigon as I was retrieving to re-cast.
Difficult in-the-face wind made good presentation a major challenge.
Saw one rise in Gravel in several hours but moving down to the hut pool for the last hour, a few fish were coming up just before it was time to go.

Best of the fishing in the morning. Mostly fished above the bridge up to start of beat. Water in good condition although low. Only a few rising fish, on and off within minutes. All caught on various weighted nymphs - Holy Grail, PTN (variant), Hares Ear. Fish up to 2lb. Very squally, rainy windy conditions in the afternoon made any attempt at the dry’s difficult. Nice to meet Louis again (Wye Usk), a fountain of knowledge and useful fishing information. We’ll be back. :)

This was an evening session starting 7pm finishing about 9.30pm concentrating on the Rock Pool at the top of the beat. I'd seen reports of a wide variety of flies hatching on the upper Wye in the past few days and that was the case again with various olives plus midges, sedge and mayflies making for clouds of fly life above the river - great to see.
I stuck to the dry fly as there were plenty of trout rising but they were selective and the usually reliable cdc shuttlecock emerger was refused by everything. A switch to a Ducks Dunn produced a few with some more coming later to a spinner pattern.
The river is unbelievably low and with the good clarity, the fish are very spooky. Stealth and presentation is everything in the calmer water, even for the smaller fish. No monsters this evening, biggest was around 11". A few barbel spotted too.
