Had another good day fishing today. Well, a brilliant day in fact. Fished Gromain all day from 9.30am, had couple of knocks through the afternoon then returned to the Willow Pool to have my last half hour fishing at 3.30pm. After about 10 casts I caught a hen salmon of 15.5lbs, my biggest ever salmon caught on a size 10 Black Salar Piglet fly which took me around 15 to 20 mins to land. This fish was fresh been in the river couple of weeks maybe. Absolutely mint condtion lovely fish and gave a brilliant fight. The fish recovered very quickly and gave a good strong swim back to the river.

Lovely beat. Sadly no Salmon seen or caught. Slightly bewlidered why you don't seem to see Salmon showing on the Wye or Usk, I haven't seen a single one this season. Sat and watched the falls for a bit but nothing showed. Still, lovely day with over 35 Trout and around 5 Grayling caught when I gave up on the Salmon!

Upper am - 50 meters downstream from Bachawy, small browns were topping freely so that is were I started. I had seven small Browns 6" to 8" all taken on an Emerger based on a Willow fly pattern then changed to a Caddis Emerger and finally a Caddis Pup. The latter accounted for 4 small but worthy Grayling, one approx just under a pound. A chance meeting with a staff member I think it was Seth, made me change my plans for the afternoon and I crossed the river and fished the area he had explained to me. On this advice I connected with 4 beautiful Browns between 3pm and 5pm, all taken on the Caddis Emerger just under the surface, well in the film. 5.20pm to 7pm was spent on the Nymph Caddis Pupa where 7 small Grayling and three small browns were taken. Cracking day.
NO Fish were taken but each one caught released and remembered, for the sport they gave me.
I love Gromain, so many differing pieces of river in one spot. Hard work yes but thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks to all Wye and Usk staff and Dr Stephen for the work which goes into keeping Gromain special, plus the tremendous hard work which goes into keeping the Wye and Usk Foundation very special.
