Beautiful section of the river and pretty good wading on the majority. Lovely hatches of March Browns from 11.30, on and off for over an hour. Large darks too. Managed only one and lost five. First day back and somewhat rusty and the fish acrobats !
Hope to return. Huge thanks to the other angler who kindly waited for me as he didn’t like to leave a woman angler on their own. Also opened and closed the gates so I could leave first. What a gentleman.

Perfect conditions if it wasn't for the cold, blustery, upstream wind. Good hatch of MB but with many missed opportunities.
Two Otters swam downstream, which was lovely to see. Great day but not many fish to show for it.

Decided to dispense with an nymph after a couple of splashy rises to my indicator fly at the bottom of the beat. A change to a quill bodied March Brown emerger with trailing shuck produced a feisty 13”er but then nothing for almost two hours’ prospecting some likely looking water. At around 2pm I walked up to the top glide and was pleased to see a few dimples. Time for a #14 Comparadun which brought six more fish to the net. The icing on the cake was a very late March Brown hatch in the faster water which yielded another couple of fish on a MB Jingler and MB emerger. All fish in the 12-15” range. Dry fly heaven !

First time on the Usk and thoroughly enjoy myself. Morning produced 14 trout to various nymphs, and then a small hatch of LDO and March Browns brought another 5 on the dry.

Arrived at 8.45 am and weather was cloudy and circa. 8c. Very little activity and no rises until about 3pm when there was a flurry of rises and a few olives on the surface. Managed to catch 1 brown trout (about 0.5 - 1.0 lb) using spiders. Shortly afterwards it went very quiet again. Lovely stretch of river.

Arrived to a high and muddy Usk, thought we'd try and make the best of it with mini lures. Lost a good fish that stayed deep and threw the hook after 30 seconds. Slowly but surely the colour was dropping out but the level stayed high with strong currents. Made my way to the top of the beat and notice a few LDOs, this built into a proper hatch and fish rose to them. Managed to winkle a couple of lean trout to my olive quill emerger, so pleasing after what I thought was going to be a difficult day.

A cold start 5C and rain in the afternoon pegged temperature back to 12C. Good water levels in the river. A brief break in the cloud around 2:00pm allowed the sun through and rising temperatures produced a short March Brown hatch of around 5 mins. Trout started rising and by the time the tackle was changed to a dry fly it was all over. Hooked a small aerobatic trout earlier in the morning on a nymph but it came off. Great to wet a line after the long winter close season.
