Sunny day 20* No shortage of rising fish, but as far as fishermen are concerned, many of them seemed to be under a " Nill by mouth order" or so it seems, despite our attempts feed them. 5 trout between two rods, small dry flies and nymphs. Best fish 1. 1/2lbs

River low and clear. Much fly life but fish topping and tailing taking just below the surface. Black CDC shuttlecock and black wet size 18 most successful.

Fished both with Dries and a single nymph. Cloudy day no wind and very pleasant. 3 x trout were small but one was between 2 and 2 1/2lb, this caught on a nymph. Found dries difficult to select as the trout rejected nearly everything I used.

Cold with chilly breeze. River fairly low; sporadic rises, with no pattern or repeat rises; so hard to evaluate fly, tactics etc. Most successful tactic was size 16/18 black wet fly, fished just below the surface. Missed a few takes, lost a couple and managed to bring 2x BT to net, 12"-14". (Same tactic, fishing with MN, same beat 3 days later, produce 7 fish).Czech & French nymphing not my thing but would like to think that these techniques would have been productive as plenty of fish in the beat and the whole beat was accessible. However, the majority of the rises were in slow moving, shallow water. Usually find the Usk very productive in the last daylight hour but left early, due to low air temperature and lack of belief that there would be an improvement in surface activity.

Great beat, only had a few hours so fished the runs towards the bottom of the beat and a quick scoot halfway up the beat.

Had an enjoyable morning on this lovely stretch which we had not fished before. Apart from the fish which was landed another three were hooked and lost in the first hour all on nymphs after which conditions seem to change perhaps due to it being a lovely hot and very sunny day? Some interest shown in dries but no firm takes. All fish were around the one pound mark.
Unfortunately we were disturbed by a middle aged couple in a canoe coming through the beat who claimed to know nothing of the canoeing restrictions which apply at this time of year.
Never the less we really liked the stretch and will be back!

On arrival our hearts sank as the river was coloured with no signs of rising fish. We struggled in the morning but in the afternoon, as the river was clearing, fish started to rise. We caught 16 trout between us all on dries, so ended the day on a high. A lovely beat, shame about an armada of canoes coming through at midday!
