First visit to Talybont - reservoir very low, very breezy, lost two with a caddis. A large caddis hatch occurred from 11am to 4pm. Worth a visit.

2 x wild trout 13 inches and 15 inches, on a small Grouse and Claret Spider retrieved slowly across the wind just before dark. Come dawn, come dusk, the better fish at Talybont move inshore for a brief period and you never quite know what you may encounter. In this case, the larger one was golden and jumped high 4 or 5 times during play; the smaller was silver and sewin-bright - despite the growing darkness I could see it twisting and turning out in the clear water. This lake's extremely beautiful shore has a wild backdrop so that it's a sheer delight just to be there, whatever the result. Walking back to the car with the moon up, there was a great crash and ripples far out in the lake as one of the heavy ones leaped.

Cold and windy day on Talybont Reservoir, no fish caught or seen. Windy conditions made casting difficult and very little insect activity. Nice to be out on the water, however I could only tolerate a few hours in the cold and wind.

Overcast day. 2 trout early in the day on black bibios, nothing for the rest of the day. Lovely setting.

1 x trout 14 inches, Williams Favourite. Evening started well, with a good breeze kicking up some sediment along the shore and a decent fish taken close in at about 8 PM. But then the wind dropped to a flat calm, the fish moved off-shore out of casting range and a horrendous plague of midges appeared to attack every inch of exposed skin. Seth at the WUF was telling me the same thing happened to him at Llyn Bugeilyn recently. I suppose it's not surprising, given the weather we have had and all the acres of mud and rotting weed exposed by receding water levels. My bottle of insect repellent seemed totally inneffective, so retreated scratching furiously to the car before dark.

5 x wild trout 8-16 inches. A rather dispiriting early evening, flat calm for once (very unusual this at Talybont)and drizzling with nothing much seen moving inshore except a single sticklebacker. But there was just half an hour of action at dusk, with the wind now up and raining quite hard; trout then came in close and all took the Bibio variant on the top dropper.

[I fish this on the Merthyr Tydfil AA ticket, but it's also a WUF water] 2 x wild brown trout, 10 inches and 17 inches, on size 16 Grouse and Claret. Fishing the lee shore at dusk, step and cast, with a light line outfit. The reservoir is low, so it's rather muddy along the shoreline at the moment.
