Another early start, river running nice and almost clear. Opted for a different approach today, maize doctored up with active 8 and hemp. Crossed the bridge and pre-baited the 3 swims that side with the said bait, set up the tip rod with feeder and hair rigged maize (2 grains to a size 10 wide gape barbless hook). Fished the bottom swim 150m below the bridge first, instant response from chub to 2.5lbs and a very nice little Barbel of 4.5lbs, swim died after the hectic start. Moved back up to just above the big tree and applied same tactics with again instant results from a chub of 2lbs. Changed to a block end feeder full of maize and hemp and a hour later landed a very fat and short barbel around 5lbs, same thing happened swim died. Another move to the top swim saw a very similar fish reaction. Early chub again, 2lbs+ and a hour wait for the next pull which saw another 5lbs barbel netted. Sat here for bite-less 2hrs. Moved everything back to the bottom swim road side of the fishery. Back to tried and tested method's here 1.1/2 oz feeder open end full of elips pellets 10mm and elips dampened ground bait, hook bait 3 10mm elips pellets hair rigged to a size 8 barbless hook. This sorted some fine old bronzed warriors (chub) to 5lbs and I never lost any gear here, taking 6 chub before I left at 2.30pm Nice steady day and a pleasant chat with the fishery owner to boot. Will be back to try a evening session soon.

A lot different to the last time I fished this beat then the water level was real low but after a few days of rain the river was up and pushing through. After starting on the road side which was slow fishing for a couple of chub, the owner of the beat came down and after a good chat he suggested a few better swims for the conditions and I never looked back. I set up in the first swim the other side of the bridge and fished the edge of the slack water. In the last 5 hours I caught 3 Barbel from just over 7lb up to just over 9lb and in the flow it was some good scraps. I also had another 9 chub from 3lb up to a PB of 5lb 6oz. So over all a fantastic days fishing.
I stayed on a nice peaceful camp site called Trippenkennet farm which is not far out side of Ross. It has nice hot showers and if the river is not fishing it also has 2 fishing lakes on site. And at only £6 a night it was a cheap 3 nights.
A big thanks to the Wye and Usk great beat great access and great fishing.

Early start on the bank for 5am, river 600mm up and rising with plenty of colour, and debris's evident. This in-turn narrowed the swim choice. Opted for the first swim over the bridge, bit of a eddy but no real slack water, straight lead 3oz and meat the size of a golf ball down the side, even with 3oz it was being dragged in to with in 12-15ft of the bank. First slamming bite at 5.45am resulted in the best of 4 Barbel going close to 9lbs and in spectacular condition. Tried the pellet and feeder but this only attracted barrow full's of weed on the retrieve (every 5mins due to constant build up). Back to the BIG meat, the bites were so ferocious in the flow, even with the bait runners on, lost 2 fish on the take as they took 20+yds off! Cormorants feeding on small chub, eels, and dace directly to my left under the willow, sad sight. Left at 10.30am after sun burnt through. No canoes by then, great time to be out, loved it. Home for a fry-up. Would be nice if we could post pics here?

I fished from 6am to 9pm. Water low and clear. Hot day. Biggest Chub 4lb 8oz. 1 Eel, no Barbel. Didn't even see one. Tried to find them with my polarised sunglasses but no luck. Fished two swims. Left bank in the middle by the stump and right side just under the bridge. Chub from both swims. Second time I've been here. I have not idea where to find Barbel here. Maybe back when the water is higher and more colored. In the afternoon 2 families arrived on canoes, stopped just in front of me and had 30 min break with children throwing stones in to the water. I have no idea if they allowed to stop anywhere? A happy and unhappy day on the river.

The fishing was hard going as expected in the sweltering heat and low river levels. We ended up with 11 chub to 3lbs and plenty of dace and chublets on feeder and waggler before retiring early to the pub. This is a lovely beat set in peaceful surroundings with good parking next to the bridge.

A roasting hot day so sat under the shade on the left hand bank a couple of swims down from the bridge. Still managed to bag a couple of Chub and three Barbel on pellets. A few people about so would suggest fish early and/or late.
