Beat:The Eyton Beat
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
The river has two distinct personalities on this beat. Below the footbridge the river is backed up behind a high weir situated at the bottom of the beat. The river here is almost static and more like a canal with thick slimy weed covering the river bed. I did see several decent trout in this section, but standard river techniques proved to be ineffective. Perhaps stillwater tactics might suceed in this part of the river.
Above the footbridge the river is completely different, with glides, pools and riffles, and some flow. This section produced for 2 rods fishing alternately, 2 trout to 35cm and 25 grayling, mainly small, but including a specimen of 46cm.
There is a lot of LWD in the river at the top of the beat, but also some good holding pools and lies. The wide riffles are teeming with fry.

First time on the Lugg, after speaking with the young lady from WUF she suggested this beat as apposed to the Arrow beats. As a previous angler has said the start of the beat to 100yds above the wier is unfishable due to weed both in and out of the water, then it gets interesting, second cast 11" grayling one of 13 caught the best 13" caught 1 minnow 3" and 9 WBT the best 14", the wooded area produced 4 of these 12/ 14" fish I also lost a few, so it can be fished, but is quite a challenge! What with the freshly fallen trees and existing trees to contend with. I fished with my 8' rod with a klinkhammer at the dropper and a bead head nymph at the point this set 5' from the drop, flies all home ties, great when they work. Fish took both point and dropper, you do need chest waders to get the best out of this beat. Fished for 7.5hrs and still did not cover all the beat. Thanks WUF for a GREAT days fishing.

Three grayling and two brownies, all on pheasant tail nymph. River still very low, numerous grayling seen plus number of large brownies. Still a very enjoyable day, could have left the waders at home and used wellies.
Will now look forward to winter grayling fishing on what to me is the best trout/grayling beat I have fished.

A very pleasent beat, but I was plagued by fry body-slamming my presentations throughout the day. May try again in the winter. Memo to WUF suggest amendment to map making the upper weir to be the end of beat as the section above weir is inaccessable.
WUF NOTE - clearance work is planned for this autumn but please see subsequent catch return from OB at Pwll-y-Faedda on 10/8/11
