First of two days and once again Courtfield spoiled us. We fished in the woods area (which I have always found more productive when the river is low). The morning was slow with only a barbel to SE and a chub to me to show for our early start. The day was bright and sunny and as a result was unproductive so we concentrated on keeping our two swims fed in preparation for the evening. As we have found so often, as soon as the shadows moved over the river in the late afternoon the fish started to feed. It was never hectic but a steady run of bites up to dusk produced another eight barbel to SE (including two super fish of 10 lbs 1 oz and 11 lbs 14 ozs) and five barbel to 7 lbs 7 ozs and one chub of 4 lbs 10 ozs to me. The only down side for me was my swim was quite rocky on the bottom and I got cut off a couple of times on hooked barbel. All fish were taken on feeder and pellet tactics. Same old tactics but it works!

We started fishing at around 11am after walking the beat and selecting swims. We decided to start in the Legg Meadow pool but struggled. We tried further downstream from the cribs with the same result. At about 6pm we moved back to the Legg Meadow pool and started to catch immediately. I think it was due to the strong sun going down, and a reduction in canoe traffic. All fish were caught on standard feeder tactics using pellets and boillies. The best barbel weighed 9lbs 12ozs (I really thought it was to be my first Wye double!) and the best chub was 5lbs 6ozs. Thank you Wye and Usk for a wonderful day.

Had the one barbel on corn. Slow day but another lovely evening. Should have had 4 or 5 barbel really but had a bit of a nightmare, lost 3 fish and snagged up a lot when the fish were feeding at dusk.

18.00 to 21.00hrs Top end of Leggs Meadow, banded 16mm Marine Halibut on simple free-sliding light leger with 18 inch hooklength fished about 15 feet out. 15lb main line, 10lb hook-length both ESP, size 8 hook and 2lb test curve rod meant I could lift the barbel off bottom before going into and under weed. I lost no tackle. Catapult fed loose small pellets and cracked marine pellets lightly at 15min intervals. 2 Chub around 3 to 4lb then 4 barbel in 5 to 7lb size and a quickly weighed Barbel of 10lb 9oz just at last light. No activity in last 30mins. Looks like the anticipated September Barbel season has started!

Battled for an hour to hook an eel nibbling the spam, then tried pellet. No sign of a fish 8 - 5pm, then four barbel between us 6lb to 9lb 4oz - well worth the wait!
