Fished from early morning to midday, warm and overcast then brightened. River very slightly coloured following rain of previous day, but, nonetheless, ideal conditions. Early morning mayfly hatch and some fish rising. Tried black nymphs and spider patterns and resulted in 3 nice feisty trout of 8 - 10 inches from the faster water. Found a group of fishing rising consistently just below the bridge. Covered with Tups and caught 3 from the swim facing the Chainbridge inn; best a lovely 1 1/2 lbs brown in beautiful condition. 2 other browns from higher up the beat on mayfly patterns. One or two salmon moving in the platform pools. A lovely beat and great to catch some of the famous Usk brownies.

Arrived early for first full outing after an interminably long close season. River 0.90 m and dropping slowly with perfect colour. A water and air temp of 9 c accompanied by a northerly wind made it difficult to stay warm when wading. The river looked so fishy though.
Rewarded with a 12 lb silver torpedo at 9.30 which took a conehead Feeler Cascade presented on a T14 10 ft tip. Good fight and swam off strongly. What a start to the season !
Saw another fish head and tail by the cables. Otherwise not a single March Brown or LDO seen never mind a rising trout.

Pleasant day at 12 degc at 12 midday though water just under 1m so decided to fish dry for trout.
Landed one lovely fish of 1.25lb on dry march brown at 14.15. Not a prolific hatch but good enough for the fish to show interest. Great to get the season off to a fine start. Fished till four when temperature fell away sharply.
