Misty warm conditions. River up by 1.5 metres and racing through, a bit of colour, but fining down. A hard slog, but just nice to be on the bankside, especially when sun popped its head out in the afternoon. Pellets, meat and cheese paste used. Heavy (5oz leads and cages) just about holding in slacker water. Chub came along without any huge bite indication, was actually surprised it was on, a dead weight until close in. An old warrior of the river. Half a tail and a rather curious dent on head. A fish of 5lb+ however. Washed out winter coloration.
Memorable day. Cider, cake and mince pies on the bank. A libation poured into the river. Huge numbers of Chub caught this year, but as summer progressed into Autumn, some decent Barbel too.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

River coming up rapidly. Fished the bottom slack which was boiling rather than a slack! Gave up a lost cause finally when the rains came.

The beauty of booking in advance! I did intend for a late season barbel session as temperatures seemed mild. Fast forward a few weeks and the "arctic blast" certainly had something to say about that. The river was up 5ft on arrival and slowly dropped as the day went on. This really is a beautiful stretch of the Wye and during the mornings snowstorm it looked magical. I opted to spend most of my time targeting pike close in at the bottom end of the stretch. A few hours were spent trying to tempt a barbel by giving different pegs 20 mins but to no avail. Late afternoon I started to get pestered by eels who shredded my Deadbait within 20 minutes of it entering the water and the one other was a small 1lb eel. It saved the blank.
Not the outcome I was after but the conditions were stacked against me. A very beautiful stretch that I'll certainly try again and hopefully I'll do better then!

Late start for me, but river running nice and clear.
Persevered on float for most of the day, catching a few smaller fish.
We switched to maggot feeder late in the day and then it was a bite every cast.
