Frosty morning followed by bright sunshine, not ideal fishing conditions. River level up by about 1.5mtr . Bites were few and far between with all the fish caught on meat with hardly a knock on pellets. Biggest Chub exactly 6lb , a new PB so happy with that. A pleasant days fishing before lockdown.

The river was dropping nicely when we arrived at 6.30am and after preparing a few swims, were into barbel almost straight away including a PB 9 1/4lb beautiful fish. From around midday the river started rising and made the sport much harder in the afternoon however several more barbel and a chub landed all on meat close in.

Stunning stretch to spend a day even if the fishing was impacted by the rising river in the afternoon. 5-6oz feeders close in were the order of the day in the increased flow and water coming through.

We decided to brave the horrendous weather and headed out in torrential rain and wind. My accomplice and I tried two up stream swims for an hour with usual feeder tactics. The water was rising and our 1.75lb TC rods were unable to withstand the flow. I was considering going to get a carp rod from the van when the bailiff arrived who was a very helpful and after short chat said we would be better off at the end of the beat in the rock pool as the water would be calmer. Not one to ignore the bailiffs advice we set off to the end of the beat to the rock pool. The rain was still hammering it down and the banks were a extremely slippery and muddy. I baited up with X 5 ground bait and boilie packed feeders and was instantly awarded with a 4lb chub. After thei the barbel moved in and the action was pretty much non -stop until we packed up at 17.00 I had barbel of 8lb,8lb9oz, 6lb and 4lb my mate had an 8lb and a 6lb. All on boilie and ground bait. Beautiful place especially the autumnal woods behind. Will defiantly return. Easy parking if that’s your thing and beautiful fish.

One of our favourite beats which has not been kind of late. River down from day before but rose during the day. Baited up and rested swim from which we regularly catch, before casting in. Barbel was attached before the rod hit the rest and safely landed. Another Barbel lost at the net before 5 more whiskers were safely landed. All were taken on either single or double krill dumbells and came withing 5/10 of casting in, which has been our experience in the past so we recast regularly with feeder tactics. Fish all caught between 10.45 and 3 pm with nothing else until a chub snagged and lost at end of the day. Despite using rope and spike one of us managed a couple of falls so care needed. Did not bump into Andy this visit but much appreciate his help and guidance. Only fished a rod length or less from the bank.

River up and rising fast. What a stunning stretch. Loads of fishable pegs. Caught 6 Barbel to 6lb and lost three. One chub, which was the angriest fish I've ever caught. Nearly lost the rod to it. Soon became clear why it was quite so angry when I removed a snapped off hooklink with a strong size 14 hook with a small red baitstop still attached.
