Had a few hours on the Llynfi today, water levels up and running fast, clarity ok for nymphing. thought I was gonna be on for a blinder as 2nd cast one of twelve inches to hand then another within a cast or two of ten inches then not a touch for half an hour. then it was mayhem for thirty minutes with six more around twelve inches. again it went quiet for thirty minutes then it kicked off again and had five more in this period two six-eight inches one twelve inches and two stonkers, one of eighteen inches and one of twenty two inches. All taking 2.5mm black beadhead baetis nymphs in the fast water. There were a lot of LDOs on the water but only two rises spotted in the time I was there

Beat:Pontithel - River Llynfi
Fishing:Winter Grayling
Water levels still running through at some pace. Most fish came between 1pm and 2pm. 2 grayling over 16 inches, others about 14 inches. All trout over 12 inches. All took size 16 point fly, nothing taking the droppers. River at .57 on the gauge, .45 would be ideal to give nymphs more time to work their way through the feeding lanes. Had a couple of grayling on bigger but lost them to hook pulls in the strong current. Still this beat is a cracker and on its day could yield some stonking fish.

Returned for another try. River in better condition and fell considerably during day. Blanked again. Any chance of clearing a way across the double fence part way up the beat?!

First time fishing this beat and loved it. Only spent a couple of hours in the afternoon but a good couple of hours. Grayling 9-17 inches and one very large grayling lost in the fast current due to a hook pull. I enjoyed this beat! perfect for winter grayling fast flowing with some cracking pools. I feel next time will fish for longer to spend more time searching some areas I walked passed due to time. The grayling lost I was gutted at, seeing the fish it would definitely of been a pb.

I did not manage to catch but had a lot of rises to dry fly. Either the fish were too quick or I had lost my touch today. Fished from about 14:30 to 17:30

As elsewhere, river very clear, slow and low enough to see the bottom in all but one of the pools. Nothing much moving either, found it hard going, landed 2 trout and one nice grayling at 12" on weighted pink shrimp. Still, I now know the contours of the pools for next year!!

At 9.00 the sun was just breaking through the dense mist on the tops of the hills where I live and the thermometer was showing a chilly 3 degrees.
Instinct said leave it an hour before making the 20min drive to the river but eagerness got the better of me.....mistake! It stayed misty and cold down in the valley until midday and by that time after standing in cold water casting to nothing for two hours I was freezing.....
Around 1pm the sun broke through and flies began to appear followed by sporadic but determined splashy rises. I was trying to target only grayling and the rising fish looked like trout so I fished subsurface until in frustration I decided to move to drys and took 2 trout on barbless Tupps, both around 12" Moving upstream and in a shallow pool came another similar size trout followed by rejection after rejection of the different dries I was trying. Swapped to a gold bead Copper John and came two nice grayling again around the 12" mark. Interesting was the total lack of action in the deep pools. Fished till 6pm.....Btw the banks are a jungle of Himalayan balsam ...make sure you find your way out before it gets dark!!!
