Parking is in a a very small layby and easily missed. Once you've squeezed your car into it, there's a short walk though the meadow to the river.
Like many of the wild stream beats, this is ankle-deep in most places and a lot of it seemed unfishable, given both the low water level and the low-hanging tree cover. The latter is, however, ideal for those anglers wishing to recreate jungle scenes from their favourite Vietnam war films.
Further up, the beat opens up and short-range overhead casting is possible. It's a beautiful, remote location with stunning scenery but I saw nothing moving and caught nothing.

Caught two small trout and one large trout of approx 14 inches and lost another of a similar size. All were caught on iron blue dun. The river was slightly coloured and water level fairly good. Very little fly activity despite the fairly warm air temperature.

I'm not a great flyfisher but this was the hardest fishing I have done. It was much colder than of late and I had forgotten my waders, so I was in wading boots and waterproof trousers - cold!!
The stream is small with not a lot of water but some tricky wading and deep gully's that are not always obvious. I dare say I spooked a lot of fish. I'm sure there are good fish to be had in these gully's but the dense growth makes for very difficult casting (more flicks really). I got hung up on many occasions.
There was a good hatch in the afternoon, but I saw only a couple of rises from tiddlers.
If that all sounds negative, it isn't! I felt I was learning a lot on a lovely little stream and despite the cold, I had to be dragged off the water at the end.
I managed to hook, but not land a small trout (long distance release).
This was my first WUF expedition but it will not be my last! Well done to all at WUF.

Dropped down to the Lower Grwyne for a few hours after fishing upper and ditto with water quality etc.
Some cracking runs for the dry and fishing was excellent, 7 trout to hand 8 to 14 inches.
Just fish each pool carefully and slow and be prepared for a surprise, the residents really nail a dry fly and go like fury!
Wonderful stretch of water and great fun, can we have some more please WUF!

An unsuccessful day on my first visit to this beat on a warm sunny day. I saw no fish rising but tried various dry flies and nymphs wherever it wasn't shallow and fast flowing. I wasn't there for the evening.

4 fish to hand including one of reasonable size. Many more lost. Met the landowner who was extremely pleasant and complimentary about WUF and the anglers that fish her stretch.

I used 4 different dry flies and only action was on Daddy Long Legs. Unfortunately I didn't catch anything. It was my first experience of wild streams and only the second time I'd fished with flies. I loved it. Nature up close and at its best. The first day was at Lower Grywne Fawr, the second day was at Pontithel. The first was more remote, the second had more water and more fish. Both excellent.
Stayed at the Wye Knot Stop Cafe - good room, very friendly and good breakfast. Across the road was the Griffin Inn - great pub, good food and even better beer.
