First time on this beat and it took me a couple of hours of fishing to brush up on my small river skills. So after hooking more than a few trees the roll casts started to work and a black tung beadheaded PTN fished on a greased leader caught me three trout and one OOS grayling. A cold day with no hatch to speak of.

Another lovely day on a clear running river. 1 Trout on a para adams (and 1 missed) during a short rise in one pool, the rest on GRHE or PTN nymphs. 4 Trout at 9" to 12", plus two 12" grayling in good condition. Only a sparse hatch but the fish were caught over the whole beat.

Very tough going, river running like the clappers and wading a real problem. Czech nymphs hard to control and bounce bottom. Arrived at 12.30pm hoping the river had dropped to .60 on gauge. Sadly it was still above .70, only two pools running steady and these were where the fish were caught. The two trout were both about 13 inches and the only grayling was a beauty between 16-17 inches and gave a great fight in the strong flow. Two other grayling lost from hook pulls in the same pool about the same size. Once hooked they were straight in the fast water and away, once a certain amount of pressure was applied... off they came.

A fantastic day on the river compared to Friday. This was like the days fishing you normally only read about for winter Grayling. Perfect river, cold and frosty to begin with followed by the warming midday sun. Cracking Grayling on Bead headed Nymphs, the biggest at 2lb 9oz. all in perfect condition.
Amazingly, on releasing, one sat in the stream with it's huge dorsal fin flowing in the current right by me. When I moved, it moved with me!!

Fished from 10.00am till 3.30pm, the water still quite high but could wade with care although there are some tricky spots if you don't know the river. Cold with a brisk north-easterly wind and no sign of life until midday when I found 3 grayling the biggest around 13", all taken on goldhead nymphs. In the final pool of the beat I had the last fish 14". All the fish were surprisingly docile and came with little fight. Cold but productive day and good to be out...thanks to all at WUF.

Warm and sunny start, so decided to try dry fly for one last time. Landed 3 grayling, 2 at 8" and one at 12", but missed loads, either completely or hook and instant release! On a grey duster. Did not solve the problem before thick cloud and a cold downstream wind put the fish down. Carried on but only caught one trout - on a pink sparkly shrimp in a grayling type glide! Instructed him on proper trout behaviour before putting him back...

Spent a couple of hours fishing the bottom half of this beat (EA gauge at 0.42m) river running clear and a little up. A few fish rising but all caught on weighted Pearly PTN (on jig hook) or Longparish Diver (on a jig hook). The 'other' fish was a 15cms Perch. Grayling 20-35 cm and the OOS was trout 25cms.

River very low, several big fished lying in the shallows spooked by clumsy approach. Managed 1 grayling to dry c-b-d and 3 more + 1wbt to Czech-nymph, all between 3 to 4 inches.
