Not a sign of a trout, which was most surprising as I had had good sport the previous day on a private beat just a few yards lower. The only fish I caught were five salmon parr.

These were very small trout – 5 inches – obviously returned. I now feel that barbless hooks should be the norm on this stream. I sense that trout of any substantial size are possibly not around. One or two Himalayan Balsam plants had popped up so I plucked these out. It is a nice, well looked after river. I enjoyed my day's fishing. Thanks.

Beat:Lower Grywne Fawr

Fishing:Trout (River)

This beautiful stream was in superb condition. Fished wet downstream for two hours on a warm and sunny afternoon. Saw little fly life and no rising fish but connected with a good fish which I lost. It is a great shame to see Himalayan Balsam invading the banks of this stream.

In very hot, dry conditions the water was extremely low and trout difficult to tempt. I did get a few offers to small dry flies, but didn't connect with anything. The coppicing has undoubtedly improved the beat but a little more maintenance would not go amiss. However, access is straightforward and the directions to the beat are easy to follow.

I found this a tough beat, lots of foliage to get snagged on and stream bed not easy to wade, mainly small boulders. Despite the difficult casting not helped by a upstream gusting wind I managed to hook three small WBT and landed one, all on small Adams drys.

River was low but four fish rising in different areas. Amazing caddis hatch and a couple of mays to. Incredible amount of insect life. Used a dry fly but missed a take. First wild stream session. Great experience but tough. Lovely river.
