River was perhaps a little low. There are some really nice deep pools and runs which are surprisingly deep for what appears to be such a small river in certain places. Few fish seen, 3 nice trout all taken deep on bead head nymphs. Casting in places is not easy and the trees have a good dozen of my flies - perhaps I'm just not a very good fisherman. If there was some trimming of the overhead branches and clearing out the side, it would be a much easier fish - however perhaps then it wouldn't be in the wild stream section!

In order to fish upstream it is necessary to reach the downstream limit, by bank, preferably.
The path indicated on the map provided really barely exists and it is very easy to end up on the wrong side of fencing - a few simple arrows would be very helpful to first time visitors who want to get on with the fishing and not worry about how to access it!
Fish were few and far between and very small but lovely water and surroundings and for £10. Overall a happy day.

The river was low, although a little higher than this time last year in the heatwave. Managed to tempt one trout, fin perfect and fighting fit, of around 8 inches on a pheasant tail fished through some faster water. Beautiful, little river and nice pub in Longtown. River banks/access in great condition. Just needed some more water! But it is the height of Summer after all. I will be back for sure. Almost certain I saw a kingfisher as well, which was magical.

After 10hours rain yesterday river was still high and coloured in the morning but fined down by 6pm to make it worth a go. First cast produced a fish but it was tricky and made wading awkward. Fish caught on Adams and sedge (with last cast about 8.30 pm).

The trout was small 6-7in taken on dry fly a second fish larger, was lost, I use barbless hooks. A grayling about 13 inches taken on nymph. There was plenty of fly life about but very few rises.

The river was quite coloured and a little high. We fished in the morning and had reasonable success with mayfly patterns. I also returned at the very end of the day and had one more trout. Mayfly were coming off every now and then though not many trout were rising to them. This is a lovely beat and we will fish it again.

Massive amount of fly life, including Mays. Many fish missed but would only take if the fly was dropped on their noses. Maybe full of food and only snatching at easy offerings? Nevertheless a lovely afternoon.

A perfect day on the Monnow. Lots of insect life; Yellow May, May, Hawthorns but strangely not a lot rising. Water clear. Four good size WBT (8-11 inches) all taken on Parachute Adams.

Same experience as AP, river quite coloured and slow but steady hatch. Few risers here and there. Tempted 2 at 8", one on a Hawthorn and one on small para adams. Missed several, trout seemed cautious today.
