After overnight rain and an 8lb Barbel 1st cast I thought we were in for a good day.

Sadly that was it!

The river looked good but to be truthful there were very few accessible swims which gave us few options on the day.

It's a shame as it's a good looking bit of river but for the cost of the day tickets we were disappointed.

Beat:Lower Crai

The Lower Crai is lovely. Long-ish flats and short riffles. All the best-looking spots are very tree-hung. This beat strikes me as a hatch beat: it can look pretty fish-less but then when the insects appear so do the fish.
I didn’t fish either long or well today but did happen to be at the right spot - a deeper chute, heavily tree-hung - just when the fish appeared, and managed three on a dry (olive comparadun) before normal incompetence resumed. One was a clonker though, 1lb 10oz, my biggest from a wild stream.

Clear bright day so tried fishing deeper (the lake is exceptionally deep) Caught a superb trout approx 14” . Very grateful to Fishing Passport for making these amazing waters so accessible.

Barbel didn't show until late on. Chub were everywhere as they seem to be everywhere on the Wye.
Pellet and feeder brought the fish

2 trout and missed another 4. All on the dry in the last hour or so. Large fish boiled at the fly but no connection unfortunatley! You can clearly see the effects of phosphate pollution on this river which is a worry. No weed in the beat and a tree full of cormorants do not bode well....
