only fished this beat in the winter when everything is a bit wet and slippery- and a trip to the stones and back is a bit of a suicide mission...a bit of an easier scramble this time of year. Plenty of barbel feeding early morning - had 6 before 7am - all on 15mm pellet. when your arm needs a rest, stick on some meat and you get chub instead. more like a quarry than a river bed - with lots of square sharp edged boulders to snag or cut you off. Really disappointed to catch several fish dragging yards of line around with them...braided hooks lengths...and all with barbed hooks. if you're going to fishy these types of snaggy areas you need to think about line and rig choices. yes i lost half a dozen fish in the rocks - but i only left em with a 4 inch hooklength and a size 12 barbless hook - not yards of tackle.

One rainbow (returned) one perch. Both on black buzzer fished slowly on sinking line. 9pm curfew a bit frustrating- fish were close to surface in the sheltered bay on the S side next to the dam for about the last 45 mins and another hour would have been interesting! Missed a take to claret buzzer on a floating line under a dink.

Cooler than of late, cloudy, some showers and a consistent downstream breeze. Fished from lower limit up to the Cilieni confluence. Surprisingly sparse in terms of rising fish, particularly in the Quarry pool. Didn’t switch to dry flies until reaching the Junction pool where two or three trout were consistently rising on the far side. One trout on heavy nymph in fast water at top of Quarry and one off the top in Junction. Plenty of shade all the way up from heavily tree lined banks helps create a cooling effect on this beat.

A client day for me on what was a very very low River Ithon ... Wales seems to be missing all this decent rainfall!!! Aarrrgggggghhhhh we desperately need it .... Anyway, in fairness, Rob Alp from London fished extremely ....Taking on board the need for ultimate stealth and presentation to rising fish !!!
I dipped the river with my thermometer ...a very healthy 14 degrees ... cracking !!!
Olives and small sedge on the go from half eleven , and fish responding to well presented dries !
Rob brought to the net seven brownies, had a futher two long range releases and some salmon parr ...
In fact thr young trout snd salmon parr abound this beat at the mo, really good too see. What isn't good is thick beds of bright green algae ... needs a dam good flush through, and soon too !!!
My client did have a cracking day too be honest .... Up in the Elenydd tommorrow ... choices choices, .... but, a sortie at the top of Claerwen Reservoir I think is in order .... lovely jubbley !!
A great guiding day on an old favourite beat ... These streams are low .... The outflows of the Elan and claerwen will be on the agenda if the dry conditions continue !! Last season, both rivers were very sporting with visiting clients....Right, this callsign is ready for a very well earned bottle of Thatchers Gold !!!! Cheers ....lol ....
