A lovely beat with good access. River slightly up and coloured. Not ideal for trotting.

Moved around and fished three different swims. Trotted with meat baits all day. Sport was relatively slow, but caught chub to 2lbs in each place. Managed two barbel each 5lbs from one swim.

Fishing:Trout (River)

A day at Lyepole always lifts my spirits. I agree with others, the river is carrying an odd milky colour. I didn't encounter a trout all day. However, I discovered the Grayling could be tempted from the depths with small, light coloured dries. (I went for light because I could see them.) Great fun, many aborted rises or missed takes but I had five to hand - all in the region of 8-10 inches.

Despite the improved river level it was a tough day fishing wise and add into that the horrible weather and consequent super slippery banks then it made for for 3 rather downcast anglers. This is a great beat and Stefan has done a great job in improving access all along the beat but he can't do this alone. There has to be a greater effort from the landowners to improve things for coarse anglers to justify the prices they charge and to improve safety. Yes, I understand the Wye is a SSSI and I know it's slippery when it rains but when it comes to agricultural matters, the landowners seem to have considerable license in what they do regarding the river banks, cattle do far more damage to river bank flaura than anglers ever will. I've also noticed that other fisheries along the Wye have put some considerable effort into improving access and safety for anglers which has been done in harmony with the river bank environment. Is a little of that on this beat to much to ask?

It has been about 15 years since I last fished this beat. Unfortunately, it wasn't the most productive day despite conditions seeming good.

Good access and many more places to fish than a couple of other visits to the Wye this week but I think I need to review tactics!!
