I had planned to fish the River Tees for some of 3rd, 4th and 5th June. Two issues frustrated that plan: (a) a significant rise in water levels on 3rd/4th making wading by an 80 year old, in an unknown river, far too risky, and (b) the fact that the most accessible areas upstream of Low Force had been cordoned off for the protection of wild flowers. I can understand and welcome plant conservation, but I think there ought to be closer liaison between The North Pennines National Landscape team and The Fishing Passport, so that these restrictions are indicated on the booking website.

Quite difficult conditions. Bright and sunny with a strong cool breeze for most of the day. Low water continues with stretches between riffle sections clear and barely moving. No significant hatches through the day or evening. Main action on nymph in upstream section, broken water, 1 brown trout landed and returned.

A gusty wind and occasional sharp showers kept fly emergence to a minimum so with a dearth of rising fish it was Euro style nymphing tactics again, in a river noticeably higher than on previous visits . Most fish fell to the #14 GRHE on the dropper today. Managed to lose 3 brownies in the streamier water due to aerobatic antics.

Almost no rises but the fish were into nymphs - especially an orange perdigon. Presumably that looks like a caddis nymph in the faster water.
