Very tough going couple of hours on the Olchon, overnight rain must have been far heavier here than expected, stream was filling on arrival and full of colour. Nine to hand all taken on 2.5mm tungsten beaded olive nymph from the centre to tails of pools within an hour, then the water clarity went from coffee to chocolate. battled on for another half hour but had to concede defeat. Plus side trout were in their feeding lanes and a fair few LDOs trickling off between 12-1pm .

As Lower Longtown was already taken, we fished?walked the Olchon. Saw a couple of dozen olives, which gave some hope but no trout.

A sparse hatch of LDO between 12.30 and 1.00 prompted next to nothing to happen. We cast, we went home. Good to be out though. Will leave it for a few weeks until the water warms up.

Dozen or so to hand in the few hours I was there. Not much fly on the water with limited rising fish. Large hornets nest in the top section of beat so be careful. All trout took beadhead nymph on dropper.

Olchon was on good form, plenty of sedges about, scruffy dubbing Elk wing caught all. Heavy rain mid afternoon turned the fish off dries but didn't want to fish nymphs.
Anglers PLEASE BEWARE - there is a large hornets (giant hornets) nest in a tree trunk near the top end of the beat on a 90* left bend where there is a sharp, steep bank on the right. I was at head height with it a metre away before realising and it is not the easiest point to get out.
WUF have been informed - please use caution.

Hard fishing - very little water in the stream despite recent rain, but pools still too deep for me to wade through. Very few places where I was able to cast, though to be fair a 9' 6" rod is too long for here. With all the gate things across the stream and the barbed wire along the field edges it seemed more like an assault course. A few fish rising in the deep pools but none taken. Gave up after 2 1/2 hours.

We fished Lower Longtown and Olchon as we could use a single parking place, sharing a ticket. The rivers were very low indeed but at least the weather had warmed up. A steady trickle of Mays but the fish were sadly fairly uninterested. A solitary fish was focussed on Mays and he succumbed to our offering. Otherwise only one or two rises all day although we did bring a few more to surface dries. Nymphs fished duo however did better. The Monnow beat gave 5 to the net and as many on and offs. The Olchon gave 2 to the net...but the fish were cannier and had we landed all that we hooked we would have more than matched the morning. All the fish were of similar size, 6 to 9 inches. The Olchon is fairly demanding with barbed wire to cross and a few large trees to negotiate.

Well, looking at the other anglers catch reports for this river I'm feeling a bit inadequate with my measly return of two fish. Never the less, it's a beautiful little stream this one and I'm sure that there are plenty of trout just waiting to be caught, they just weren't very obliging on this outing. It was a very cold start to the day and with a cold strong wind blowing down river it was never going to be easy. Very little sign of fish moving and very little in the way of insect life either - just the very occasional mayfly hatched out, all of which probably wished they hadn't bothered. I did see a beautiful yellow may dun later in the afternoon.

Steady mayfly hatch from 11am kept the trout rising till 6pm. Fine plump wild fish from 6 to 13 inches.
